Hi All...I'm Marty from Pittsboro.

I was hoping some of ya'll could give me some assistance identifying this odd-looking shrimp-relative that we netted near the Intercoastal on Oak Island. Notice the flaps on the underside, which are visible in the profile and the upside down version (which is a crappy pic, i know). They move in succession to motor this bugger along, and the things which seem to look like legs don't seem to move it much at all.

Anyone have any clue about this weirdo?

Mantis Shrimp. Actually good eating when they get really big, but they with pinch the crap out of you if you're not careful.

I've heard them called Thumb Splitters. Apparently they occasionally "appear" in saltwater fish tanks after eggs hatch within newly added rocks or coral. They have been known to break the glass of the aquarium or deliver painful lacerations to the unsuspecting hand cleaning the tank. Usually cleaning taking place after the fish "disappear".
