You have to run offshore to catch them, and not a whole lot of people want to committ to that.
King Mack tourneys are far more common as you can snag one 5 miles off the beach, or even closer, so just about anybody has a shot at one.
There are very few dolphin/wahoo/tuna tourneys either for the same reason. Marlin are a special case as they're so presitigious and monstrous that it's worth targetting, and that's why they have the calcuttas for the bycatch in these tourneys (tuna/dolphin/wahoo) because if you're already out there, you might as well have the option to target some other stuff while you're at it. |

| I would have disagree with King fisherman not running far, they are more apt to run farther than marlin fisherman. Just one that comes to mind, Dean Spatholt (Fishmiester) ran from the east side of the Cape to Savannah Ga. to weigh A fish in last year and won. If I'm not mistaking that was over 400 miles. |

Oh I agree that KMT participants CAN run along way if they want, but it's not a necessity to do so in order to be successful. You *cant* catch a legal grouper off the beach. People catch king macks off the piers all the time.
Any boat can go out and be in KM territory, which increases the potential # of participants and prize money. If you held a grouper tourney, you're not going to get as many participants, and if the weather is a bit windy, you're gonna get a lot of seasick participants. |

I was in the Dixie Chicken last year in S.C. - thay have all kinds of weighins - inshore I think it was flounder, reds, specks, and spanish and the offshore division was for tuna, wahoo, and mahi.
It was also part of the flounder fun-a-ment or maybe that was the name of the flounder division.
Something for everyone - and a good time lots of nice folks in Little River and N Myrtle area _________________ "Haley Shea"

I respectfully disagree. There is an butt load of Grouper in this Ocean. There is more than I think you can hurt with Hook and Line. You just have to know where to look.

safmc is just a front, for a few marine biologist's & environmentalists
Who are going to save the ocean.
Question:What subjects do you need to become a marine biologist?
In: School Subjects
Answer:
Biology, zoology, chemistry, English and mathematics.
Its amazing how people with little to no real life training, can
make poor decisions that effect thousands of peoples lives &
get away with it. Based on junk science. _________________

Here is what happens....
Example #1...
They go on these "Science Expeditions" and they can't catch any ....so there are NONE there. YEt, Joe or I or many other folks around can go about any day of the week and load the boat. Why? Becasue we know how.
Example #2...
They take catch data for 20 years ago and compare it to catch data from last year....the numbers are WAY down....so there must no be any fish in the Ocean?
BS! The effort is what is way down not the fish. The 2 for 1 Commercial lic...the price of boats and fuel...people can not afford to go. I would bet you the man fishing hour to man fishing hour that the numbers of fish are close!
Just my .02!
