Here's the SEDAR final report for the assessment side of things:

http://www.sefsc.noaa.gov/sedar/download/SEDAR%20Supl01%20Grouper%20Review%20Final.pdf?id=DOCUMENT

Here's a quick facksheet for the scoping meetings prepared by SAFMC:
http://www.safmc.net/Portals/6/Library/PubHearDocs/Am16Fact%20SheetRev1.pdf

Those documents helped me understand a bit more about this amendment. Hope this helps.

Well those docs. make it clear that
Since commercial permits stopped being issued
pressure on gag grouper has dropped.
How they come up with those recreational #'s is mind boggling.
It's not likely that they are right. At best they are a poor guess.
And where is the bad data to shut down red groupers and scamps.
Thanks for the info, I'm having a hard time understanding it though.
Keep digging we will find something.

it is very interesting how they come up w/them numbers joe.
it is truly insane that 8 people control the whole "cussword" south atlantic ocean!! rebel I say!! with the cost involved a lot of people are staying on the hill, you think they take that in consideration?? no

remember fellas.....just going by poundage isn't a good way to look at it.
If there are more people fishing for grouper, there's likely going to be more landed.
It has to be normalized to effort.

I have been in touch with Tom Swatzel, and he is telling me that he and a couple of others that voted against the closures are sending something to the secretary of commerce to try to persuade him not to sign on this amemdent. This is the final step. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Here's the major flaws in there assessment.
First it says gag grouper landings, which is totally false
Second they guessed at rec limits.
since 92 landings peaked, then have dropped.
They are sliding reds & other shallow water groupers
into the mix without data. And there Scientific gag data is
based on poor fish caught the wrong time of the year.
2 months jan & feb.How they gather data is horrible.
There is minimal time & effort, I know this because
I was part of it, A very small part of it.I'll tell that
story later. They have no idea what they are doing
and I have offered to help, but have been ignored
for years now. They needed to make cuts to look like they
are doing something good, thats the only reason this was made.
The Gulf Red Grouper fishery is in much worse shape then ours.
It will collapse due to long line gear, but thats big business.
The little guy doesn't stand a chance. What i'm scared of, is they
get rid of us little guys, stocks rebuild, and they reintroduce
long line gear off our coast? I've seen the effects of long line gear off our coast before, you can't catch nothing after they are through.
I'm just pecking at the the top of the iceberg, they load it up
and go home.

Is there a way to send letters to the Sec. of Commerce or maybe the SAMFC? Can we do something in a fashion like others did for the trailering issue? We could draft a letter, post a link or email address and let people pound away. Would something like this help out?

I'm talking it over with dave as soon as I get more facts.
The Sec. of Commerce I haven't found a good way to reach him yet.
As for SAMFC council members, I didn't want to flood Someone who has voted for us,
just the tree huggers,Need to see how they voted.

Here are the ways they survey catches in the SEDAR:

NMFS headboat survey
Commercial logbook program
Marine Recreational Fishery Statistics Survey (MRFSS)

Here is some info about the survey methodology:
http://www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov/st1/recreational/overview/overview.html

Some notes on the SEDAR 10 South Atlantic Gag Assessment:

-There were no usable fishery-independent data. Other assessments used SEAMAP underwater camera surveys for this.
-This assessment includes data through 2004. This is my biggest possible complaint with the assessment.

Here's a glossary of fishing terms that helped to read through these reports:
http://consensus.fsu.edu/pfs/PDFS/Glossary_of_Fishery_Terms-1.pdf

The measures passed on a 8-5 vote. The council members that voted against the closure were Rita Merrit, John Wallace, Tony Iarocci, Mark Robson, and Tom Swatzel. As far as how to get in touch with the council, either individually or as a whole, look on the main page, right hand side of the screen, and Capt. Dave has a link for the SAFMC. It allows you to voice your concerns, and pick who you want you comments to go to.

All five members with good fishing backround voted to keep it open.
While the so called 8 Marine specialists voted to close it.
Can you say railroaded.
