Folks the CRFL Advisory Committee (saltwater fishing license) meets 10/6 in Morehead to rank proposals submitted for funding through CRFL monies.
What do you feel are the most critical proposals to fund first? What do you think your CRFL license money should be spent on? Some proposals are for charitable efforts like Take a Kid Fishing. Others are for access like boat ramps. Some are for tagging studies for speckled trout. A Request for proposal (RFP) for funding improvements to the information gathering process has been submitted for consderation.
While the committee can only provide advice to the Marine Fisheries Commission -- it would be nice to hear from you folks about what priorities you would like for your investment in a license monies to go toward.
Let's hear from all of you who bought a NC Coastal Rec. Saltwater Fishing License
One thing I should make clear is that the money is not just spent on a whim -- all proposals must be run through a RFP process and only proposals from universities, NC government entities, DMF or WRC are eligible to receive funding. Groups or other persons must partner with these eligible agencies.
At this point of the process DMF has requested and received RFPs and have forwarded these to the Advisory Committee for angler input. Like all other advisory committees the MFC can override our propsal rankings. They will then pick the ones they want funded and at the same time the WRC will pick the ones they want. Then they must jointly agree on what gets funded. If WRC or DMF opts to not fund one or all of the proposals -- then they don't get funded. While I don't think that will happen -- it could.
Regardless of whether a license dollar gets spent or not -- we are obligated to go through the RFP and advisory committee consideration process. This is the very first round. The process and proposals will get better over time as it matures.

Buy the fryingpan tower, outfit it with rodholders and canepoles and a little fresh water, jail the 8 members of the SAFMC on it (without food) and let's see what happens in 2009

I'll second the boat ramps - with plenty of Parking! Also like the idea of more artificial reefs. _________________ Pursuit 2350 w/twin Johnson 140s

I say road repair, new bridges, especially around Raleigh where the legislatures are. That's where it's gonna end up anyhow, may as well be the first to get on board! That salt water fising license never shoud have been passed. They tried to do it in Rhode Island and the fishing club I was in launched a campaign to have it dropped as recreational anglers put 3 X the dollars into the economy than commercial interests. It never got off the ground in Rhode Island. Good luck getting it repealed here. They don't even have a place to spend it (here) except on new equipment and jobs for the gov't employees. They will be darn sure you are not violating any laws and write you up just as quickly to get even more revenues.

Sorry "fishing license". I need to clean my reading glasses or use spell check. Also, the cama permit for a boat lift has doubled from $100 to $200. It's out of control and with no accountatability. Thanks, Borolow(?) for pointing out the meeting.

I wonder how much of OUR money will be spent on RFP's to who-knows-who and how-many-times before they can decide what to do with it and then realize they spent it all paying third parties just trying to figure out how much things would cost ! _________________ "Haley Shea"

Bonowell-
As this is your first post, I'm guessing you might have joined up for the opportunity to ask this. If that's the case, thanks for putting some effort into gauging what the recreational fishermen are really interested in. Otherwise, welcome to the site, and enjoy!
I've seen several things on here I like that I thought of as well (boat ramp maintanence, inlet dredging). I think Take-a-Kid Fishing programs are a great idea, but that just screams inefficient use of resources as I can see it taking lots of admin effort to bring that to fruition (bureaucracy of co-ordination would just make this a nightmare). The MAD program seems to go quite well from what I've read on here, and I believe that's mostly volunteer effort, without the government sucking $$ out of it without getting a return.
I saw someone's post about more boats for fisheries officers, but think that might have had some sarcasm, if not...sorry!!
In addition to the great ideas mentioned, I wouldn't mind seeing additional wildlife officers. Despite all of the fishing I do (and it's probably not as much as some others on here) I've *never* been checked in salt-water, and only once in fresh, and I don't know how many times I've seen peeps with lots of illegals in their cooler. The positition could potentially pay for itself in fines, and would possible help the sagging economy.
I'm personally in favor of the salt-water licensure, but don't want to go into it.

Pay for more enforcement. The Wildlife officers in our area are by far the most professional and courteous group, IMO. Ensure all vessels are within compliance of the rules and regulations.
Throw some $$ at enforcing pollution control.
As always, boaters access is something we all agree on for the most part.
Thanks for listening and showing an interest from the guys who pay some of the bills.
More QUALIFIED people for studies of fish status. Whether it be personel to observe commercial catches or recreational catches, we need people who have an idea about fish stocks standing up for us little guys.
I would also like to see more law officers out there along with immagration officers to nail all these illegal mexicans raping the resources. _________________ Make something idiot proof, and they build a better idiot

Thank you! The MAD program is 100% volunteer driven and 98% of every penny raised goes directly into an event. We have 2% in admin fees for lawyers, postage, printing etc..
As chairman of the MAD BOD, I ust wanted to address that and did not mean to hijack this thread.. _________________
