I took my laptop to work today to get ready for are fantasy football league and a few of the young guys I work with saw my Frying pan screen saver. Well the first thing that came out of their mouths, where is it ? Have you been to it? Have you been on it? Have you ever seen anyone on it? Do you think you could climb up it? Do you think you could dive off of it? And the big one, Is it legal to get on?
I wasn't to surprised by any of their questions since I know all of them pretty well. You know the type 18 to 22 with more guts then brains.
I told them , yes I do go to the tower a good bit on my way back in from steeples. I like to do a little horse trading, Mahi for snapper ( I don't bottom fish that well ) I also told them I have never been on the tower, to much bird-shit for me. And I told them I have never seen anyone else on it. I told them Iam sure you could climb it but it looks like its in pretty poor shape. I also told them that its allot taller than it looks in the photo.
But the legal one is one thing Iam not sure about. I know its over 12 miles out and it is a abandoned structure. So is it fair game to tie up to? Or is it like a offshore buoy that your not to touch? |

Well, I was hoping to let someone else have this one but here goes.
It is a USCG Statio and I bet....if caught they would not like it very much. Although...I am with ya. I would LOVE to go on it too!
I bet it is cool as can be! _________________ Capt. Dave

Well here it goes frying pan tower is a weather station and treated as a buoy.In 1979 The tower is equipped with a fog horn, radio beacon, and computer in addition to the automated light.Station FPSN7 - Frying Pan Shoals, NC
Owned and maintained by National Data Buoy Center
C-MAN station
Here is what they have to say about boarding it.
Neither boarding nor tying-up to a data buoy;
giving the buoy a wide berth to avoid entangling the buoy's mooring or other equipment suspended from the buoy--500 yards for vessels which are trailing gear, and at least 20 yards for all others;
reporting to the U.S. Coast Guard any damage you observe to a data buoy;
reporting to the U.S. Coast Guard any observation of people on or vessels attached to a weather buoy.
Hope this helps
Barry
PS
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news I would love to get on it |
