Mullet; Yes I keep my boat at Sea Aire Canel, thanks for the compliment. I'll be sure to stop by the Rod & Reel Shop the next time that I am down. I hope to make it down to fish sometime between Christmas and New Year, weather depending of course. Next time you are in Sea Aire Canal, be sure to stop by my dock and say hello if you see a white truck in the driveway. I can't seem to get down as often as I would like. Work keeps getting in the way of fishing. _________________ Terry

| Don't even think of using Lockwood Folly Inlet at low tide. It was just 1 huge breaker all across the inlet Saturday at low tide. My son and I had to go up to Caper Fear to get back in on the ICW. The inlet wasn't too bad in late October, but a mess now, think bottom out or broach in the breakers. |

BottomScratcher; Thanks for the update. I thought Lockwook Folly must be almost impassable at low tide by now. I was through Lockwood Folly on Dec 8th at about mid tide and there wasn't much water near red bouy 6. There seems to be a sand bar across the entire channel width near bouy 6. _________________ Terry

I have been running lockwood a good bit lately, and have been having to go on the east(oak island) side of the # 6 can. If you have to run it, please be careful. _________________ Capt. Lyndon Carter

Went out LWI on Monday 12-17 and man it was bad...We were in the channel huggin the Holden side during mid tide and ran ground in a my 25'er. Looks like a bad sandbar that only gets worse north. Hope the early year dredge does us good. Also i think i remember hearing the other day that Bush approved a mucho millon $ bill to dredge NC inlets and ICWs in 2008. Anybody else hear anything? _________________ "Big Kahunas"

24M to aid area beaches, dredging
House may act on massive spending bill today, and send it to President Bush
By Vicky Eckenrode
Staff Writer/Wilmington Star
vicky.eckenrode@starnewsonline.com
The coastal area is positioned to receive about $24 million for beach nourishment and dredging projects in the massive federal spending bill Congress is debating in its final hours before adjourning for the year.
The Senate on Tuesday night approved the $516 billion omnibus spending bill that funds most federal agencies and includes the money for Wilmington-area projects.
The House voted for it Monday night and would have to approve it again today because the Senate added another $70 billion for funding in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bill would then be sent to President Bush for his signature.
The local money for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects includes more than $3.7 million for Wilmington Harbor deepening and $378,000 for sand restoration at the Brunswick area beaches.
The spending bill also includes nearly $5.5 million for dredging in the Intercoastal Waterway.
"We have got a great Christmas present for Southeastern North Carolina," said Rep. Mike McIntyre, D-N.C. "The money is an astounding amount, especially when you consider the money that's included for the Wilmington Harbor, beach renourishment and for the deepening of our inlets."
He said it has been an intense fight to fund the inlet and waterway projects, particularly against the backdrop of the overall budget fights in Washington this year.
McIntyre pointed out that the beach restoration requests for Wilmington and other coastal areas have been left out of the Bush administration's recent budget proposals.
Local spending projects also have come under scrutiny this year as the new Democratic-controlled Congress vowed to tighten down on earmarks as pet projects for lawmakers to take home to their constituents.
McIntyre said lawmakers were under pressure to show a wider relevance for any type of special project request.
"This year, to get these fundings you have to show there is a regional or national significance," he said, adding that he argued on the safety and business benefits of maintaining and deepening the waterways. "There's clearly a regional impact economically that in turn has a national impact when you consider the intercoastal water and the coastline is an environmental treasure." |

Well guys, we fought for this before, we WILL fight for it once it again. It is time to start back e-mailing and calling out congressman and senators. The politicians are the ones who make the decision on whether or not we will be able to use our shallow-draft inlets, so let's let them know how we feel, and what kind of shape our inlets are in. They don't know how much of a saftey hazard shallow-drafts inlets are right now. If our inlets shoal up to much for safe navigation, it will hurt the coastal economy. If charter boats have to run an additional 10-15 miles to get out in the ocean, we will suffer. The local commercial fleet is already having to run to Southport or Little River to get out, but if this continues, they may have relocate somewhere closer. This will definitely hurt the local economy. _________________ Capt. Lyndon Carter

Went out LF Inlet Sunday 1-7-08. We were going out at dead low tide on a calm day. No problems at all. Just watch yourself around the #6 can. _________________ 18' Wellcraft

Anyone run Lockwood Inlet lately? I'm going down next weekend and wondering what it's like... actually Lockwood or Shallotte. I ran Lockwood several times in September and October, never been through Shallotte though.
Thanks! |

Lockwood is in terrible shape. I'm running it at least twice a week, and it gets worse every time. There is a sandbar almost all the way across the channel between the #'s 4 & 6 cans. If you run it, be careful. It is hard to tell where the channel is at low tide, with it breaking all the way across. _________________ Capt. Lyndon Carter

Hey guys, the corp of engineers brought a spud dredge and began dredging yesterday. Hopefully with them hauling the spoil away from the inlet, it will stay open a little longer, though I doubt it. The Merritt spent 23 days dredging last time, and it lasted all of 3 weeks, if were lucky. As long as a:they continue to dredge the channel in it's current location, and b:keep hauling in sand for beach renuritement, the inlet will not remain in good shape for long. It is waste of money to haul the red "sand" that are putting on the beach, when they could just set up a pipe line dredge in the inlet, and pump the sand from the inlet on the beach. That's were the beach sand is ending up anyway. Supposedly, the sand from the inlet is not of the right type to put on the beach. Where do they the sand that is clogging the inlet is coming from? Reckon someone's pockets are getting fatter? _________________ Capt. Lyndon Carter

| That little side spitter dredge they use is a waste of time. It doesn't throw the sand far enough that it won't wash back. they need to pipe it to the beach. I do not remember this much problem with the inlet till they changed the course so you go straight out. |

| Trying to get an update from anyone who has been thru LF inlet and what the curent condition is. I know they dredged about a week or 2 ago but haven't seen a new survey or if they were able to break thru the bar that was clogging it. It also seems like the cans are still in the same spot and I know from personal experience that they are not right. Hit bottom twice a few weeks ago. Does anyone know a site where we can contact the right people or see what has been done? |
