I know this has been brought up before I'm sure and in the end the two are so similar you probably can't go wrong with either. I myself am a Penn fan because the first time I picked up a Tiagra it was an 80 and while in the middle of a fight with a White the handle pops off the reel. The second time I was fishing with a 30 and the drag was running fine, a hoo was spooling line when out of nowhere it just locked up and the line broke.
I realize the tiagras do have a louder clicker and a slightly smoother drag than penns, but I have got to question their durablility because through my experience with them, I wouldn't consider buying one.
I'd like to hear what some of you have to say about each of these reels because I'm considering purchasing another 50 or 80 and am unsure of what to get. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. _________________ Matt Ginthner

Ok, I heard it is a trend thing, sort of like clothing, and that a few years ago everybody had Penns and now people are shifting to shimanos. I'll probably still get a Penn though. _________________ Matt Ginthner

You cant go wrong with Penn Internationals. We run 50TW's and 30 2- speeds for the stream and we have never had any problems with them at all!!!! _________________ Ronnie Barnette & Justin Avery-(grandson)

I have absolutely beat the crap out of both Penn and Shimano reels. I choose the Shimanos by far from 20lb. to 80lb. class. They always hold the drags exactly after a long day of fishing. I can check the drags everyday and they will be the same. They seem to just hold up extremely well in charter and record fishing. However, as far as 130's go, it's hard to beat the Penn 130ST and the old school 130's for shear durability and simplicity repairing and using fighting truly big fish with extremely heavy drag. _________________ Capt. I agree with Capt John on the Shimano choice. I have two 50W's loaded with 130 braid and topped with mono.... 130# for BFT and 80# during the summer fishing season. In combo with a 100#-unlimited rod and a two piece full fighting harness, they are as much stand-up tackle as I ever care to hold. All of the guys who stand-up fish for BFT out of OIB use them set up just that way, and I have heard nothing but praise for them. I might think of a 130 if I was in a large boat and a fighting chair, but for the way I fish, I am VERY happy with the Tiagra's. (I do have a pair of 2-speed Penn 30's, and an 80W also, but love the Shimano 50W's) You can't go wrong with either! _________________ Captain Tom Beckham

I've got several 30 and 50 Internationals that are due a thorough cleaning and rehab after years of fun and maybe some abuse. Any recommendations for someone in the Southport or Wrightsville Beach areas to do the work? Thanks. _________________ Phil
