Use a #24 or 32 planer 100ft of 200/300 mono cleat it to the stern and send it down . Rig your bait and let it out 30/50 ft or how ever far you want it to run behind the planer put the rod in the rod holder. Use a #64 rubber band and wrap around the line coming from the rod by passing the rubber band thru its self 5 times, this is where most people mess up the rubber band has to grip that line tight. I use a double ended coast lock snap, take the 2 ends of the rubber band and clip it in the coast lock then clip the other end of the coast lock on to the plainer line, now you are ready to let 100 ft of line off the reel the clip will go right down to the planer and when the fish hits it will pop the rubber band. If you don't have the rubber band gripping the line real tight the bait will slip and a bow will form in the line and pull the bait right up to the planer. Have lots of clips on hand and just keep sending them down as you need to re-bait .

Some pictures to help you understand the concept.....ICM

I was reading this thread and had to jump in. The planer release rig works wonderful, but I'm assuming that most of you guys are on center consoles and space is at a minimum onboard. My all time best wahoo killer is an old school wireline rig. I actually pull one every single trip and it just plain catches fish.

The wireline rig I'm talking about is a 114H Senator loaded with 80lb. soft wire line. You can use braid if you like, but I still like the wire.

The rod is a 6'6" med. heavy rod with stainless eyes and swivel tip.

All you do is attach a heavy snap swivel to the wire line with a haywire twist, add a #4 Planer, about 40 feet of 130lb. mono to a Spro swivel, and then your lure/bait combo w/ about 3 feet of #9 wire.

My favorite bait is an Ilander/med. ballyhoo combo. Usually in pink, Halloween, or Black/blue. The new Flasher series are the heat as well.
Check out the Matanza by Squidnation.com. It is my top bait in a crunch too.

You just run the whole rig like any other planer and hold on. When the fish comes up you just leader him up and reset the rig after he's chilling in the box. The reason you have to use wire or braid is so you can trip the planer to check the bait.

All you have to do is pull back on the rod and snap it forward. This trips the planer because the line has no stretch. I'll try and take some pics so you understand better. I use this rig everywhere and on any size boat.

Here's some pics of the wire line in action. I'll take some pics of the rig when i go to the boat later on.

All the fish in these pics were caught on the wire line except the mahis.

I went on a charter Fri and we were dragging a planer with either a spoon, or a ballyhoo which we alternated.. The first mate said that Wahoo are ambush feeders and they hit the bait "head on" sometimes and the planer snaps their neck really hard.. haha that explains why I didnt have to really fight them.. If they were to hit it from the back they would put up a fight.. I dont know if it is true that they hit it from the front but it sure makes sense.. my $.02 on planers and wahoo

The planer works great. I fish mine off my downrigger as if I was fishing bluefin. I use the rubber band and paper clip, but I like the double snap better less messing around. Also, Most of my offshore trolling lures were built by Ballyhood. Darrell has a real handle on what works. The wahoo express lures are the heat. One thing I learned when I work on the Long Range Boats out of San Diego is they don't troll baits just naked lures, and they work just fine. As for myself I'll pull some baits but my other lure out fish the bait every time. When fishing wahoo you sometime need to speed it up and the bait just wash out to fast. Some of the best wahoo fisherman only pull a spread of three rods when trolling over 12knots. I set mine at 250 ft, 200ft and 150ft when high speed trolling you avoid all the bs when having to turn. Believe me this method works.
Just a reply to scottfl78 I've caught alot of wahoo and never had one that didn't just smoke the reel. Maybe it's because what ever charter you were on was fishing 80 wides and never idled back.Anyway can't beat fishing wahoo.

Well it was a big Penn International rig.. Maybe the tackle was so that it didnt seem to fight much.. We were doin a good 10kts it seemed also.. He idled back a little.. I sure would have expected more of a fight but who knows. We seemed to be rigged for the biggest case scenario being that there were sails around but I asked and they said that billfish rarely hit planer rigs..

You can fish sails on 20lb spinning tackle, all of my gulfstream fishing is done with 30 2 speeds or tld 20's or 25's. That's all you need. When I fish Bluefin it's on 50's with a charter or 80 to 130's when I commercial fish.

Ping Sea Draggin on the bridle rig. I watched him put that together out in Charlotte one night and it looked very, very simple. He uses long line clips and crimps.

He also has drawings and phots that he can post.
