I'm heading down to Holden Beach this weekend for a week. Right now it looks like the weather will calm by Monday, so I plan to go bottom fishing with a buddy. I want to hook him up with some grouper, but probably don't have the range to get to 100 ft +. I'm looking at the Gary Ennis AR that is in 90-95 ft or the Horseshoe area that is about the same depth. Does anyone have a suggestion of which one would be more productive in terms of gags, or any other bottom that is within 35 nm? The Fisherman's Post indicates gags are in 70-80 ft of water. If anyone has a reliable spot closer I'll get Dave to give you a year's usage of ReefCast for free Smile

thanks for any help!

i dont know about the holden beach area but i would stay away from AR's and wrecks grouper fishing way to many things for them to wrap around and alot of sharks find some natural structure and you will be able to catch more of what you hook.

Just run offshore and start looking. If you see some rough bottom and bait fish it. If you see a change in the bottom and no bait, fish that too. If it's calm drift over the spot and test it out. If it's rough, anchor up and fish.

This time of year you should be able to catch nice grouper from 8 miles on out. Try differnet things. Take some live P-nut menhaden and fish those on the botom. Good luck.

after looking on I-map i would head out toward the 15 mile rocks, atlantic ledge, or the horseshoe. and while your out there keep an eye on your sounder if you don't see anything on the ledge after passing over it a few times there normally aint much there, but have someone drop down a bait while someone else keeps the boat pointed into the current if ya pull something good up drop anchor and have fun.

Thanks for all the info. We have many spots on the east side of Lookout, but have not fished for grouper off Holden. We may go ahead and probe some of the live bottom numbers around 15 mile and shark hole, then head offshore if they do not produce. Cheers!

I remember about this time last year there was some grouper caught around Christina Ledge, I would also check on the Imap around the Long Bay areas . there are some good ledges and live bottoms there. It is in the 35 mi range. BP 25 too
