Joined Joe and Phil (lynyard) yesterday for my first 08 trip.
If the rest of my trips this new year are all gonna be like this one.......I'll be in a wheelchair rollin around at a mental institution by the end of the year!!
Started the day in-shore on a FLAT pond and kept hammering the BSB till Joe had enough of that and moved us further off-shore. Very few groupers seem to be holding where we tried, cause by noon we only had 4-5 groupies and god only knows how many bsb's.
One more run further off-shore, we finally ran into them and started filling the boxes, at one stop it was like catchin bait on sabiki's with the bait being BIG reds and gags!!
All the sudden I hear Joe yelling "cobia!!" and looking over the side there's this MONSTER-cobia circling the boat. Joe tried free-gaffing without succes but on the next drop the cobia decides to nail his bait and the fight is on!!!
You had to have been there to truly understand what was going on for the next 30min, but I WAS LAUGHING MY A$$ OFF!!!! Both Joe and Phil trying to get a handle on this fish..........Joe hands the reel over to Phil whom gets drug all over the boat by this fish while Joe is hootin and hollering and following Phil with the gaff wielding everywhere.......me trying to stay clear.... At one point Phil on his knees, almost getting pulled over the side....Joe grabs the rod and finally got the fish boatside where it met the steel.
Don't know the weight but it was BIG!!
Pulled anchor right before sun-set and ran the 40 miles back to the dock.
Unloaded 50+ groupers, couple off boxes "trash-fish",shook hands and hit the road around 8pm
Back home by mid-night and YES!!..........I'm wore out!!
THANKS JOE AND PHIL!!!! ENJOYED IT!!

When the cobia hit, the deck was a total mess.
Groupers under your feet, everything they had
spit up stuck to your shoes, and that cobia loved
my yamaha enough to rip 2 gashes one on each hand
while trying to keep the 100lb line out of the motor.
Bet it was funny to watch It was kinda
painfull, right after pulling all those groupers
so fast. Junkyard has some pics of the groupers and
will post them soon.Going fishng tomorrow, healing today.
Cobia was 65lb

WOW,Phil myself and Joe had a great time on Sat but Sunday looks like a war zone-and by the way I caught a grouper so big (obvious to the casual observer)that Joe couldn't even believe it...I kept telling him all the way in that mine was the biggest in the box and somehow he still couldn't comprehend this massive bohemoth!!!It looked like Joe's and Phil's but was built out of better stock I think.
Oh yea 5 american reds, in 20 mins and monster beeliners and Joe says ok reel em up lets go get the good ones,I almost told them to leave me there and pick me back up in a couple hours-best fishing of which I personally have ever participated.
OH yeah when you fish with Joe and Phil and you brag when ya get a little ahead of them early....they will come back to embarass you in the end .
Thanks again Joe, Cupcake the grouper killer

Man that looks fun,i sure miss the florida panhandle for that reason alone, the cobia run in the fall is awesome, anyone that has not tried spot fihing them from a tower needs to go try you will be hooked. now i just need to figure how to stow away on that boat with joe
Great Cobia. I love casting to them, but free gaffing them is a little too hardcore for me. They are mean as hell after 30 minute fights. I've had them break the tops off coolers and sweep me off my feet. I can't imagine bringing a green 50 pounder on deck and living to tell about it. Have any of yall done it? _________________ Mark Kelley
