I have 2 Penn Senator 3165RS rods w/Penn 330GT Reels w/80# Penn mono. They have handled anything I brought up. The only down side is the gear ratio, but they were only arond $200.00/rig. I fished on the Rough and Ready and Joe had a Shimano reel (I think) that had such a big gear ratio, I was running the swivel into the top eye because it was so fast. I really liked his reel because it has longer/fat handle that you can crank easily and brought the Gags up with quikly once they were tired. He said the reel cost around $80.00, but I can't remember the brand or model number. _________________ 2007 Nautic Star 2110 |

| Penn 6/0 114 senator with matching (50-100lb) rod for the budget-minded or ck the smaller AVETS with high retrieve (lx model) and match it up with a "grouperhawg" rod. (pm me if interested in a "grouperhawg" build to your specs) |

You can usually find a penn 4/0 combo for $100. I've got 4 of them about 17 years old that are still going strong. _________________ Tommy Stewart

Trevela Jigging Rod & Torium 30 Reel (spooled with 80# PowerPro) not cheap but worth every penny.......is what I use - both for jigging & bait fishing.........
Catching Grouper or any fish on a Jig is addictive & can get expensive when Kings decide to join the party. Jigging keeps you in the game, the way topwater fishing does. 10 to 20 oz lead & baited hook gets old after awhile. Getting a fish to hit a 4oz jig never gets old......ICM |

I was mistaken. It wasn't a Shimano, it's the reel RoughandReady posted but even better with a rod under 100. I might have to pick up a couple of them myself. _________________ 2007 Nautic Star 2110 |

If you've never seen them, the TICA ST series is absolutely worth taking a look at.
http://www.ticaglobal.com/EN/AM/PR_Reels_A.asp?Model=TICATEAM%20ST-R%20series&type=ST358R(G)
This is a very high quality reel for about $180 retail. With a 4.2-1 gear ratio, it can handle almost all of your offshore needs from grouper to trolling for dolphin and king mackerel.
Just another option and opinion. Poke around their website, they have some really nice rods and other reels as well. |

penn 113 special senator with a penn slammer rod the 50-80 model sells for $100 at boaters world, or a Avet LX 6.0:1 i picked up a few myself after getting addicted to them on the Rough N' Ready. and like sgalley said if you don't watch what your doing you will reel the swivel into the first eye.

Will Penn senator 113H work for grouper? I've never caught one but am interested after learning about catching them at the Raleigh expo. I will likely be dropping butterfly jigs because I know nothing about using bottom rigs. _________________ Mark Kelley

a 113 will work fine for bait fishing but if your going to be fishing with metal jigs you need something with a higher gear ratio at least 5.5:1
