Anyone have any info on Personal Locator Beacons. I’m thinking of picking one up and found this website for the SPOT. Seems pretty reasonable $150 for the unit and $100/yr for the service. It floats and is waterproof, and it can even send a message to the wife saying that you’re fine. http://findmespot.com/Home.aspx

We have the SPOT with basic $99 service. We didn't get the extra unlimited tracking or GEOS. No complaints thus far. Smile

The last thing I want is a way for someone to bother me when I'm fishing. I have a PLB and it does exactly what I want it to do - provide an exact position if I have to deploy it ... Confused

We've tried the OK feature 17 miles out (havent been out any further this year yet...) - it sent the message + our GPS location (link to it on Google Earth) in an email to our list of contacts.

It says:

* Floats in water
* Waterproof to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes

Is it waterproof enough for the sea or do you need a drybag?

I have a SPOT and have used it on a couple of trips so far. It works flawlessly. Being able to send an "All OK" message to your family is a big plus for me. Don't worry, it isn't two way....your wife can't contact you!!!

The Globalstar sat phones are garbage and should be treated as such. The s-band amplifiers on their satilites are failing and failing fast. Spot uses the l-band uplink which there are NO problems with. So there should be no problems for Spot users due to the satilites. That said though I still would not clasify Spot in the same league as a true PLB, and personaly I'll stick with my EPIRB. As for price, a Spot and what, 3 to 4 years of subscription will buy a true PLB.

I Have an EPIRB, but am interested in a SAT phone to contact home... as well as my sister boat. Anyone have a good one that they would recommend? And a service provider for it?

A SPOT is not a true PLB. They are fine for what they are, but don't confuse them with a PLB or an EPIRB. I have a PLB with the built in GPS. Gives me a lot of comfort knowing I can press two buttons and help will be on the way. Both my kids know how to activate it in case of emergency. I paid $650 for it but have no regrets.

I have a true EPIRB, but just got the spot. It was cheap enough and is knda cool to track your fishing spots and send messages home. We were otut at the stream last Wednesday about 65 mile from home and hit the OK feature everytime we hooked up with fish. It worked great.

I would also be interested in Sat phone info if anyone has one.
