I have been busting my tail learning to throw the 10' 5/8" cast net but can't find any bait since the end of November for the most part. Where can you find the menhaden this time of year? Are they on the beach? I ran along Oak Island beaches on Tuesday but didn't see any sign of any live bait. Are they still out on vacation or where ever they go?

Dang, fishing is hard work.

My bad, I should do a little intro I guess. I bought my first boat a couple years back and have found out what work is to get ready to run and seaworthy. Break Out Another Thousand has been true so far. I bought it for my son and I to play but he gets seasick very easy but I still like to go. I've learned a tremendous amount and offer help and info when I can, but have many questions. Did I mention that fishing is hard work esp when 20 or 30 miles out by yourself trying to run 5 lines of spinning ballyhoo Sad

Get him a script for the "Patch" through his regular Doc. Cut it in half and apply the night before.

Learn to rig right......LOL
The Hoo has to be pulled by the pin and not the hook. If it pulls from the hook.....it spins. If it pulls by the pin it does not.

Fishing by yourself......BAD BAD BAD
Use this forum to find some folks to fish with.

They will be here in 2-3 weeks depending on the water temps. They will start showing down your way first when temps reach 65 and above. Whenever the Spanish arive, they too will arive.

The patch is the way to go. They even make a pill version that can be taken that morning.

Good luck finding the bait. I'm up at CB, and when I see the first batches, I'll let you know.

I caught my first pogies of last year around this time. I cuaght them off the beach at Southport at the Hot Hole. When they get to an area they will stay about a week in the ocean and then they will make there way to the inside. I heard that there was some hatchlings in our marina moving around last weekend in Sneads Ferry. It won't be long.

the pogies start running in around may. i can't wait use them for just about everything. i hope the pogie boats don't come this year i had a hard time finding bait last year for the tournamnets.
by the way steve save me some pogies for the tournaments and my offer for you to fish with me still stands.

as far as sea sickness goes, if you dont want to get the patch which is the best thing, goto boaters world and they have a remedie in a bottle that you put a drop behind your ear, that seems to work pretty well.

now as far as fishing alone, that is a nono. too many things can happen while fishing. take someone with you always. i made a pack with my wife when i bought my boat that i will never use the boat by myself. besides just like capt dave said, there are alot of great people here that will show you the ropes and go with you. just post your needs and they will respond pretty quick.

Thanks for the replies. Finding bait last year was a challenge. Danged pogie boat. I'd be more than happy to see it turned into an artificial reef. Last year I got a good haul and ran out to fish only to discover that my transom mounted pump hose came off at the pump and all the water leaked back out of my Kodiak livewell. lol, that sucked as I had just installed the 27 gallon livewell last season and was ready to go.

I spent this past weekend brining some hoo to learn how and making some rigs. I am now a believer in using the pin rigs. I was trying to use just the copper riggin wire without the pin but didn't have much luck. What worked best for me was 1/2 oz weight with a short pin with a rubberband. Then I used rigging wire to wrap up the small portion of snout that I left on. Mustad 7.0 hook with either a haywire to Malin #4 wire or crimp to stainless steel cable. I tied about 4 feet of seaguar flurocarbon 30 or 40 lb to the cable or wire with an albright knot finished off with a 60 or 80 lb spro swivel. What do you guys think? Didn't catch anything at the CF river channel or 18 mile rock on Tuesday but I'm feel sure the water was too cold yet.

I would be more than willing to hook up for some fishing.

get a subski rig and go out to the ar and drop it down to the bottom and pull up what down there on a good day you can have all the bait you want in a half hour and dont burn any gas. i also fish out of holden beach

Throwing a ten foot 5/8" net is a work out. Bu not nearly as exhausting as running all over the place, wasting precious fishing time looking for menhaden. Word of advice....look at the bait surrounding the buoys around some the ARs.....for what you spent on that net you can have a butt load of sabiki rigs. Drop one down amongst that swarm of bait and load up your live well. Cigar minows, greenies, tomtates all make very very very....did I mention very good live bait? Live cigar minnows are extremely hardy and they last a heck of a lot longer than menhaden. Ballyhoo is fine, and yes Kings will hit em. But honestly, have you ever seen a bait ball of ballyhoo close in? Long story short, fish will hit what bait is available. Pin rigs are fine but can be cumbersome...Hank Brown hook up lures are the best....3/4 oz heads in numerous colors abound. Buy em pre rigged or make em up by hand. Just run that big ole hook up thru the chin and out the center of the hoo's eyes and maybe put the treble in his butt hole.....drop him over the side and make sure he swims...they work great. Kings and anything else will hit them. Best of luck and hope this helps.
