if you have a VHF radio just do radio checks with sea tow, or another shore station on the way out. when you cant get them on the radio turn around.. my .02 _________________ Scott Selkey

if you get 2.5 mpg with a 50 gallon tank and expect to go 20 miles out, troll around for a while and then get back your gonna need an extra 50 plus gallons of gas, or am I missing something here? as far as being able to handle it, there is no doubt your boat is capable of handling the situation as long as you got the fuel capacity to get you there and back.

uhhhh 2.5 times 50 is 20 miles out, 20 miles back and 85 miles worth of trolling. I still have the school books if you wanna borrow them again |

I just read this thread and I decided to throw my 2 cents in. I fish out of MHC and weather permitting make at least 1 trip a week to the BR or SWB in a 20ft Sea Hunt CC with a 150 Yamaha 4 stk. I have a 62 gal tank and usually burn around 25-30 gal to do a 100-135 mile round trip. Only one time on a sudden weather malfunction have I burnt over 30 gal. yea it was a slow 12knot, wet ride in but we took our time and finally hooked up with the Impulse and rode Cameron's prop wash back to MHC.
I always run out with the fleet and stay in contact with friends. Especially in the summer keep a eye on the horizon for T Storms, got caught in a bad one a couple summers ago with FishnWarrior. Nowhere to run or hide it blew up so fast. Don't wait until its to late to make the run to the hill, theres always another day to fish! Luckily theres some good samaratians in MHC and they will help out the small boater when things go to crap, the stern of a 50fter is the best site you could see.

wow, I'm nervous about a 40 mile trip and your running like 100. I guess once I get more time on the pond under my belt that confidence will come.

Ran into one of the local Seatow guys on Saturday. His basic rule of thumb is nothing smaller than 25 feet, and the boat must have two engines. Seems like a reasonable position to me.

I ran 110 mile round trip on Saturday in my 21. Good weather and knowing there were plenty of boats were I was going made me feel fine about it. The inlet was the worst of it. _________________ SEA FOX 216

I was just reading all the posts and most of these guys are right on the money. I fish out of wilmington and run a 23 mckee craft 63 miles to the stream. It has twins, and I have handled the ocean in some of the worst conditions possible. I also run a 206 sea pro out up to 50 miles max. Watch the weather, don't take chances and always remember that you cant swim to shore from 8 miles out either. Good luck and catch them up.
