I'm guessing the inlet is still in bad shape?
I'm going down this weekend and am itching to get outside if the weather is decent. Staying in Holden and used Lockwood Inlet last year but looks like that's a no-no. Anyone ran Shallotte Inlet? I've never used it but it sounds like a better option at this point. |

Lockwood is pretty bad. I checked it out 4/27. Shalotte is in much better shape and passable at any tide. _________________ "Big Kahunas"

Never been out of Shallotte Inlet all the way, although I've fished the area a lot. Any tips on going out of the inlet, or just stay between the cans?
Thanks! |

Yep, stay between the cans and youll be fine. If your within an hour before or aft low tide, hug the east side (holden) and maybe take it slow _________________ "Big Kahunas"

Lockwood Folly's inlet SUCKS there is no water in between the cans. We went out of there last weekend and at marker 8 we hung a left and went outside the cans about 100 yards. The Can #'s 5,6,3,4 are on a wicked sandbar. On our way in there was a boat stuck on the bar, we assisted called the Coast Gaurd before we got them off. The C.G. met us at bluewater point. Lockwood folly is in terrible shape.
Went out of shallotte inlet two weeks ago had plenty of water. _________________ Zack Shackleton

| Goto the Army Corp for Wilmington site and you can find a survey from April 28 that gives waypoints for the deeper water. It shows the deeper water out of the channel. Hope it helps everyone, but it would be easier for them to move the cans!! |

When we went out Memorial day weekend, we headed for the "orange ball" per a sport fishing boats recomendation, plenty of water trhough there. This is where the new channel is being dredged, which is way left of where the cans were at that time.
Have the cans been moved to the new channel? is the dredging done? _________________ Raleigh/Holden Beach

| The Merritt has been down there for about 2 weeks. They are leaving June 6th. They are supposed to move the cans to the new inlet that they dredged as soon as possible. I have been thru the area being dredged a few times and there is plenty of water. Came thru yesterday and there was about 6 foot at low tide and it is a new moon tide that was extremely low. The Bendigo wreck was about 5 ft above the water line and there was a bar between the cans that was sticking out of the water. DO NOT go thru the cans that have been there. The dredge is pumping sand and it looks like it is filling in between the cans. There is a pinkish orange temporary buoy that marks where the clean water is. Get the coordinates from the Army Corp. Wilmington site before going. At high tide I had 10 ft. of water as the lowest following the waypoints. Hope this helps. |

Have they moved the cans? I appreciate the updates as I only get down 1 x month and do not want to spend it on a sand bar.
Thank you! |

As of Saturday they hadn't. There is still a channel where the cans are, but there is a newer, deeper one that is unmarked.
Going out the inlet there is a large sandbar/beach at the tip of Oak Island. There is actually a red "can" from the old channel that sits on the beach there at low tide. Go past it and 1/4 way to the next red can. Turn slightly left and you will see the new channel. It is easily detected as there will be breakers on either side of it. The lowest water I marked was 9' at low tide. There is a huge sandbar between this channel and the old one. There was a Grady White trying to get off of it on Saturday when I was coming back in.

Just found this new survey overlaid on a picture from February. The old channel is beside the "Bendigo". Man was it sticking out of the water on Saturday. Higher than I'd ever seen before. |

| They moved the cans this afternoon to the new channel. Came thru between the tides and had 8 ft of water. |
