I have a question about bottom paint for my boat.
Before I ask it I would like to say how much I enjoy this site.
I seldom post, but I visit quite a bit.
I have learned so much in the last year or so that I am now actually catching fish when I go. In the past my wife would always lay something out for supper every time I went. That hasn’t happened in over a year. She now expects and looks forward to fish each trip.
Big thanks to all that post.

My question is about a 19` Grady White with an out bracket.
I purchased it from a friend with a wet slip and it required painting.
I trailer it and will not be keeping it in the water. I just need to repaint it for looks only.
It is chipped in a few places and worn off on a few.
I need advice on what paint to use and how much would be required.
Thanks.

You want a non-ablative or "hard" bottom paint if you trailer. If it was kept in the water then it probably has ablative or sloughing paint. I don't know how well non-ablative will bond to ablative. Either way you will want to do some serious sanding to remove most of the old paint and make sure the new adheres well. The back of the can usually has the details on the prep work, primer, etc. You will want to follow those directions pretty close.

I would spend the money to have the boat soda blasted and start over with a Hard bottom paint.

Does anyone local do soda blasting? How much does it cost? I'm in the same boat with the gypsygirl. My boat has 3-4 layers of bottom paint, and it looks awful, and (I think) ruins my gas mileage.

If the boat is not going to be in a slip, I would suggest investing on having it removed entirely. IMO

I had 2 Gradys and one of them was on a trailer, had it removed and never had a problem. Worth having it redone.

I used a water sand blaster and removed about 8 layers of hard antifouling paint and 2 separate barrier coats, in about 1 hour on a 26 ft. hull. It wasn't that hard to do. When I was done I sanded the bottom with a DA sander, and then put about 6 coats of Interlux VC Performance Epoxy . If you roll and tip the epoxy as you apply it it will require only minimal wet sanding and some buffing to wind up looking as good as the original gelcoat. The nice thing about the performance epoxy is that it is as tough as a waffle house steak, and is teflon impregnated , making it super slippery through the water, and very easy to keep clean. Smile
