The method I like best is simply double your line holding the loop up. Tie the balloon around the doubled line. When the fish hits the doubled line pulls through the tie. Yes, you loose the balloon, but hopefully without the added drag of having a balloon still attached you want loose the fish. Fast and easy and the most effective for me.

I second the rubber band. You will be able to pull it off when it gets to the rod tip and re-use it instead of letting it float off and pollute the water and possibly kill something needlessly.

Loop the rubber band through itself onto the line were you want it. Then tie it tho the knot on the ballon

what keeps the rubber band from coming loose and slipping? I always have the problem of the balloon sliding to the beginning of the leader,

Wrap the band 3 to five times around the leader then tie a double overhand knot in the band. It will look like a wadded up mess. BUT, about 80% of the time when the band breaks from a strike it will unravel from the leader and you will have clean leader comming to the eyes of your rod.

Haven't figured out what to do about the other 20%, but have only had a leader break at the band attachment about 2% of the time. The stronger leader seems to straighten and shed the remainder of the band.

I used to tie a baloon direct to the leader. This is not good practice....take it from me!

Id like to hear of a better way myself.

(I'm using a #64 band most of the time.)

Miles' method sounds good......when the leader tightens it pulls out from the baloon. I'm gonna try it vs my old rubber band method.

They make biodegradable water balloons you can get that disolve in the sunlight after a while. I haven't used them yet but they should outlast the bait. My 2c. Wink
