TWIC.........

http://www.tsa.gov/what_we_do/layers/twic/twic_faqs.shtm

Congress, through the Maritime Transportation Security Act, or MTSA, directed the federal government to issue a biometric transportation security credential to any individual with unescorted access to secure areas of facilities and vessels and all mariners holding Coast Guard issued credentials or qualification documents. Controlling access to secure areas is a critical component of the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) efforts to enhance port security.

What is TWIC?

TWIC is a common identification credential for all personnel requiring unescorted access to secure areas of MTSA-regulated facilities and vessels, and all mariners holding Coast Guard-issued credentials. TSA will issue workers a tamper-resistant "Smart Card" containing the worker's biometric (fingerprint template) to allow for a positive link between the card itself and the individual.

What are the compliance dates for the TWIC program?

Owners and operators of vessels and all U.S. credentialed mariners will be required to comply with the provisions of the final TWIC rule by September 25, 2008.

Dave

Have been working on this crap for the last 2 months. Along with all documented / licensed captains, any of my workers that will be on paper mills, refinery's, oil rigs, cruise ships, etc. with an un-patrolled / gaurded port is going to be required to have this card as well.

It is a pain in the a$$ to even get registered on their web site to set up an account - much less actually get it done. I will go in the system and find out where the nearest office is for our area and post it up later today.

This is their idea of a background check Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Just another way to suck $130.00 dollars out ALOT of pockets.

LOL, I'd be willing to bet they would issue one to Captain Osama himself.
Another piece of red tape that accomplishes very little.

All this extra money the government is forking out for national
security, yet we still seem to get stuck with the bill?
For something that was supposed to be done when we
were issued our captains licenses, in the first place.
I was fingerprinted & had a backround check & drug test,
health checked, eyes checked.Just a year ago.
I could understand this being done when we renew our licenses,
But to make us go though this before then is just plain stupid &
shows how inefficient our government is.

Been reading about this, but haven't made any attempt to get the new card yet. Let us know how it goes.
