I want to buy a spinning reel that I can use to cast at wahoo or any larger fish when I'm after grouper. Had a 5-6 foot wahoo check out the fish we were bringing up before he hammered one of them on a grouper rig and took off.
Any thoughts on Shimano, Penn and Quantum??

IMPO you can't find a better drag than a shimano. I will not have anything else but you know how opinions are. Shperos are great reels and won't break you check out boaters world rod and reel combos.

When you get ready to load it with braid take a look at this . It will save you money in the long run.

Cabo 80 is good. I have been using one to jig for grouper and AJ's......it would be a good choice for what you want and it has 40+ pounds of drag.

I will have to agree with Bodie. I have a Penn 850ss for my jigging setup. Works like a champ. We tested the reel and it put out close to 40lbs of drag. If you go with the penn, get the 850 due to the big handle. If you jigg with it, make sure you buy the spare spool, especially if WAHOO's are involved.

.. I had a guy from Holden wanting to trade a Finn-Nor on a Blue Diamond rod in on the little Blazer.. I think the combo could be had for $100.. Dunno if that's good or bad.. Cap'n Don hooked me up with an old Penn 704 I thought I might try if I can find a decent rod for it.....Jaaannnnn.. d:^) Schneeky..

Try the saragosa 18000. It has 44 pounds of drag. It's what there putting on the jigging rods and if anyone wants a good price on the shimano trevala and that reel loaded with 80 pound braid you can get it 100.00 cheaper at eastern outfitters in hampstead then you can here in wilmington. Sorry 100.00 is a lot so I though I would let you know.

any thoughts on the shimano tallus? I'm trying to put a rod and reel together from cabelas where I have a gift card.

For the money I thought I'd put the quantum cabo 80 on the shimano tallus. Puts me right under the number I have to spend.
