|
|
I am relatively new to the saltwater fishing scene and was wondering if someone could help me out, I generally fish out of Oak Island,NC and live in Charlotte,NC about 200 miles away.
I need help with understanding wave forecast and help with some resources, all I ever see is EX. 2'- to 4' seas, that doesn't tell me much other than wave height, Is there a way to tell which conditions are best for Oak Island/Southport area??? Is there a way to tell whether 2 to 4' seas would be a nice slow up and down or a bone rattling slam into the next wave, what about chop, these are all things I here but am not comfortable with.
Also any help with what conditions are best for Oak Island area.
Thanks for any help. _________________ Knot Sure

Click on Reefcast on the toolbar at the top of the page, click on the spot you want to fish. It will give you a graph of wind speed/wind direction and a graph of wave height/period. Then set it to ensomble and that will give you a graph of the forcast certainty(lines close together =pretty certain). ALWAYS use all availible forcast tools and your knoggin to make the call based on you and your boats limitations. Hope this helps. _________________ Donnie (Reel Affliction II) |

Sandman,
What youa re looking for is Period.
3 foot every 3 secs sux and 10 foot every 12 secs is flat.
The general rule of thumb is anything over 9 secs is pretty nice....anything under 7 secs is choppy and under 5 secs sux.

I can say what a great help the reefcast is. I am self employed and can slip away from work at a moments notice 75% of the time. Watching the reefcast is the way I plan my fishing trips.(Along with advice from a great friend from CB.) With the way the weather has been the past year, most weekends just don't workout. I have a 19' Seahunt w/ 115 yam. so it's got to be pretty nice for me to head offshore. Along w/ what Capt. Dave said about wave distance apart, I Also pay attention to wind speed. 15 kts or higher on my boat somebody's getting wet, either going out or returning home. I'd like to give a great big THANK YOU to Capt. Dave and all the folks who help on FPT web-site. Keep up the good work guys. You are very important to lots of fishermen who need this info to stay safe. _________________ May the water be smooth and the fish fight rough...............Wavepounder

CAPN DAVES RIGHT, WAVE PERIOD, TIGHTER PERIOD THE ROUGHER IT IS. ALSO WHEN ITS A BUILDING SEA FORECAST, WELL STAY ON THE HILL. WHEN ITS N.E. WIND ITS FLAT DOWN THERE TO ABOUT 5 MILES OUT WHERE AS ON THE EAST SIDE ITS AN A55 KICKER. REEFCAST IS A GREAT TOOL, WHEN REEFCAST AND NOAA AGREE, THATS A PRETTY ACCURATE FORECAST.......AND ITS FORECASTING. AND IF ITS FORECASTED ON THE ROUGHER SIDE, YOU CAN COUNT ON IT BEING ROUGHER THAN HECK _________________ Technologically Advanced
