The first bill to be sent to be introduced just came out this morning. We will be expecting 2-4 bills for introduction on the boat towing issue. These bills will be up review and then possibly whittled down to one bill. It will be interesting to see what the others will look like. once we get the bill or bills that will be introduced we will need th get back on the letter sending campaign to get it passed. We will have another form letter ready when this happens. Please read the bills ...Mark

I'm embarrassed to say I've been reduced to tying rope the the guide posts to bring them together - just to get under 102". Looks stupid, more time at launch/retrieve, but I'll try to stay out of the $500 club.

Provided your boat weighs less than 10,000 lbs (my guess is that only poeple with at least 30' boats would begin to approach 10k lbs) - Weight is going to be a separate issue from the oversize permit.

Everyone over 102" will need the oversize permit from the DOT.

If you are pulling with an SUV, that is all you need.

if you are pulling with a pickup truck, you will wish you were pulling with an SUV...just kidding...but you will need weighted tags to be compliant (unless it is a real small boat that is light enough to be covered by your standard license plate weight limit as listed on your registration - not likely if it is over 102")

if your trailer is stamped with a GVWR of 10,001 lbs or greater, you will need a Class A driver's liscense. (regardless of pickup or suv)

http://www.ncdot.org/doh/Operations/dp_chief_eng/maintenance/permits/docs/AnnualGenApp.pdf

this is the document you will need for DOT oversize. Fill it out and take it to the office in Raleigh on Rock Quarry rd (I-40 exit 300) and you will walk out the door in 20 minutes with your permit in hand. If you mail it to them, they told me it could take up to 6-8 weeks (I drove there from Wilmington, got my permit and was back home in less than 5 hours)

permit is $105

Capt Slim, did they really tell you it could take 6-8 weeks to get an overwidth permit??! I hadn't even thought about checking into that. About when were you told that? Recently?

I wouldn't take those lights off those guideposts. I'm trying to argue that lights mounted on guideposts are safety items and thus, should not be counted in the width. Similairly, if splash guards are mounted on your trailer fenders, I think there's an exclusion for that too. Sort of like the wide mirrors that RV'ers use aren't counted in their width measurement. The CFR says if it's non-load carrying, it shouldn't count in the width measurement. Youd think the state wouldn't be any more restrictive than the fed is.

Fishzilla, overweight and overwidth are two completely seperate things. You don't need overweight tags if you pull with an SUV. You only need overwidth if you're over 102" wide, trailer or boat. We're trying to get a change in the 102" width. But I guess it will take awhile before anything passes and becomes new law. I'm still going to wait and see what happens. At most, I'll get a one day permit for $12 and hope they'll move new legislation through quickly.

FYI, it was referred yesterday to the Senate Committee on Rules and Operations. Not to the Senate Transportation Committee. That's very odd. It's now Senate bill #1589. Lets wait and see what other bills are introduced (if any) before we make any calls or comments. We should know today or tomm if any other bills are introduced. And what bills are introduced in the House as well.

seasea if you are that worried about lights on your guide post get the guide post with the lights built into them not on the sides or buy the led lights that screw into the post and run vertically

NO!! leave the lights on the guide posts!! I was told to install lights on our guideposts, and when we did we did not have to include them in our measurements.

With the light, it becomes an extra safety signal, not necessarily a part of your tow.
