I'm looking to purchase a new cast net which I'll use for catching pogies along the beach of NC and SC. I'm not sure what size net to get. I want something that is not too big to throw but is fast sinking. I've seen the different radius sizes, which I think I would like an 8ft but I was not sure about the different size of the mesh.
Also, what brand do you recommend that will last the longest?

I WOULD RECOMMEND AT LEAST A 10FT CALUSA....WE USE A TWELVE, A TEN, AND WE HAD A FOURTEEN BUT RIPPED IT. WE HAVE ZERO ISSUES OUT OF THE CALUSA'S

I totally agree with the above statement. IMHO Calusa is the heat, but I'm sure you will get the Ford vs Chevy argument on this one.

Look at it, if you like what you see and can throw it, buy it.

I have a 10 ft. West Coast from Boater's World and it is a good net. If you are going to use it stricly for pogies 5/8 or even 3/4 with 1 1/2 lbs of lead per foot will work pretty well. my net is 3/8 in. mesh and it works good in shallower water up to 20 ft deep if the bait isn't spooked easily. I can catch finger mullet with it too if they are thick. I had an 8 ft. with 1/2 in mesh before and I really had better luck with it. Either one works well and I can fill my baitwell up with one cast and have some to give away or turn loose. the bigger mesh will sink a little faster. If you are around Shallotte or Ocean Isle you should check with Gordons Net works at Brick Landing, he has some good prices on cast nets and has some fast sinking mullet nets that alot of the guys use.

For my $225 I like Calusa it opens 50% better than a betts . It hits the water more like a pancke then a cone . This may just be the way I throw it. I like the heavy 1.7 # per foot 5/8 mesh 10'

I second all the calusa comments. I got their cracker version....a little cheaper, but in my opinion just as effective. Think mine is the same specs as RACs.

I have an 8ft west coast with 1.5 lbs of lead and a 3/4 mesh. I can't tell you how good it catches bait because Jerry Dilsaver just showed me how to throw it. He did tell me that a net hitting the water like a parachute will catch more pogies than one hitting the water completely open. Something about it sinking faster because the weights get farther down in the water before the rest of the net hits and slows it down. Sounds good but I don't know.

I like the Betts Superpro 22-10 , in camo , I have been throwing the Betts since the early 90's and have never had a problem once I learned how to throw them . You just have to try and see what you like to throw and get someone to spend a few minutes with you to teach you the technique .
If you are going to throw primary for pogey's I would reccomend at least a 10ft net with 11/2 pounds of weight per foot Once you start throwing a bigger net you will even think it is easier than say a 6ft net

10 ft West Coast. Best net I've ever owned.

just like ricky stated, it is like ford vs chevy. i have a 8ft, 10ft, and a 12 ft betts super pro and i like it alot and it does open nicely. i have thrown the west coast and the calusa and for the money, i dont think you can go wrong with the betts. as far as the mesh size goes, it depends on the size of the pogies. my 8 ft and the 10 ft net is 5/8 mesh and the 12 ft net is the 3/4 mesh. if you are not careful you will gill the smaller ones. try them out at the tackle shop and decided what works for you the best. the 12 ft net is 1.7 lb per foot.
my 2 cents worth.

thanks for all the responses. this gives me a little more information. I've actually owned a Betts but it dry rotted on me after 2 years. Never even let it sit in the sun.
Thanks again, I'll probably go with a 10 ft Calusa. Not sure on the mesh size yet but I know the pogies tend to get skittish around our area late in the season so a quick sinking net I've heard works the best.

I've had a 12' Betts since 1988 and it's still working just fine. I bought it at the tackle store that used to be in Leland. The trick is don't throw over oysters and always soak the net in soap and water followed by a good rinse. I dry my net in front of a fan then store it in my bucket. I bought a 10' Betts last year and it opens great. catches just as many as the 12',

i have had the Betts to rip because of too many pogeys in the net , shells , batteries, being caught in a boat prop but never have I had 1 dry rot , Sunlight is a major enemy as well as not taking a few minutes to clean it after use ,,, but that is with any net

Thanks for the help. I went ahead and order a cracker 10' 5/8 net from their online store. They did not have any demos available.
I'll make sure this net is well taken care of too.
Thanks again!
