The spanish mackerel and king mackerel bit great again on Monday, we were done fishing by 10 am, 23 spanish and 8 kings. Nothing huge, spanish were to 20" the kings ranged from 25"-31". Nice fish, all on yozuris small pink, medium orange.
Saturday we went for grouper, 42 miles in a forecast that NOAA booted again! Passing the ramp it looked like the shotgun start at a king tournament, alot of people looked at the same forecast.
Got on station at the first ledge and jigged a fat red, bait was producing a few pinkies and a lone seabass. Hit another ledge and was having a hard time jogging into the 15+ kt wind and 4'sea, did not want to anchor because the way the bow was dipping into the waves and green water was pouring over. About 8:30 started to troll with Hank Brown rigs and cigars and northern mackerel, the mahi were hungry. Between 8:30 and 12 we put 6 mahi in the box and lost 5 to operator errors of sorts, the worst was when a big bull took the flat line bait and the angler picked-up the rod with line screeching off it and SETS THE HOOK! breaking the fish off and smacking the rod into the t-top. With our bait running low we decided to drop on a small ledge, great call! The fish were fired up there. We got 3 reds and a throwback scamp and some 14-16 pinkies to finish out the trip. If the seas had calmed just a little more we could have dropped the hook and cleaned-up........next time.
