I have been checking out some used sportfishing boats just wonder if anyone can tell me what the average lifespan in hours and years of a properly maintained diesel engine is.
Thanks in advance

No way to tell. Too many variables.
I did put 9,000 hours on a Cat 3208 a while back with very little trouble.

It all depends on a number of things. Turbo charged or naturally aspirated, have they been well maintained, and so forth. You also might want to consider maintanance costs and parts availability.

For me, changing oil and running clean fuel were key in keeping my Detroit 6-71 TA's running and trouble free. I always checked the oil and all fluid levels before I left the dock and when I returned even though it was hot.

Capt Shane I am just looking at different boats right now and trying to gain some knowledge. I am looking at a 29ft sportfish with twin turbo Volvo 200hp in it. They are 2000 models.
Thanks, Jerry Caton

Volvos arent cheap but they are good engines we have a set of 760 hp in the Fight-N-Lady & are very happy with them.

Capt Shane,
That is one sweet boat y'all have. I'll take something about half the size for about 1/10th the price.
