.. Mrs Sandy and I are figgerin out that we'd just as soon have shade and comfort over pure "fishability" in a boat.. And we need more room for our carcasses to roam about.. Mrs Sandy'd like a little more "convenience" over that fancy lid I got for a five gallon bucket as well.. Laughing
..This time I'm thinkin I have a taste for somethin inboard.. Like one of those hard top cruisers with some open area in the back to drop a line out of.. Any reason one of these contraptions couldn't putter on out to the Tower or some such if the mood struck.?
..I've heard varying reports on the fuel consumption of these rigs.. Everything from 3ish to 15 GPH.. I s'pose a lot of it has to do with speed just like the rest..

Heck, I've even been eye-ballin' a few Bayliners ***GASP*** Shocked

.. I reckon the only real way to know is to get one and try it out but I'd like to hear some opinions on the subject.. Schneeky (the boat) may be in trouble.. d:^) Schneeky..

..Yeah, I know.. Confused A lot of folks almost spit naturally when they say the name.. But I'm curious as to exactly why.. Have they ever owned one.? I may be completely off my rocker and popular opinion is that they're to be avoided.. But then again it was once popular opinion that the world was flat.. Wink Laughing
..The rigs I've looked at seem to be fairing pretty well for their years.. I've seen worse on supposedly "better" brands.. The layouts are OK..
.. I always thought their smaller boats looked kindof flimsy till I helped a friend try to beat one into pieces to take to the dump.. After several failed attempts with the sledge hammer we caved and got the sawzall after it.!!

..That said, we're not looking at the smaller ones and if we did end up trying it we'd hafta get into it "really right".. Wink We're looking at lots of different brands, actually.. Might get lucky and trip over "somethin" one-of-these-days.. There's lots of neat larger & older rigs hangin around for sale.. d:^) Schneeky..

I know this guy who has a bayliner I/O with the cobra outdrive it has an enclosed cabin and I think it is 25ft long .. it looks like a decent enough boat and I could see some conditions that it would be very nice buttttt............... I dont think he has had a fishing trip on it the past year that he has not had some type of mechanical problem , I would get a nice tool box , 2 of everytype of part and I hope you have a lot of mechanical albility

well i can tell you this. people say bad things about bayliners, but i have had one for about 1.5 yrs it is a trophy 2159 1990 model. i can this it has been a great ride. has a hard top to keep out of the sun as well as a cuddy. been out to the swansboro hole a couple times and i am amazed at how little fuel it uses. after running pretty much wide open all day pulling the kids around i have still managed to only burn just over 35 gals . some tell me how to post pics and i will show you.

Well maybe the newer ones are a bit better... I have heard this (specifically the trophy models) but throughout my career in the coast guard, and most station guys will agree, I have run more SAR cases and disabled boats with Bayliners than any other brand. Just my .02 but I wont own one. Are you looking for something more like a cruiser? Or just something with a cabin like a walk around? I know they may be a little pricy but sometimes you can find a good deal on an older Carolina Classic or Albermarle, and they are GREAT boats. My father in law lucked up and got a nice 25' Carolina Classic last year for just under 20K.

doghouse- Click on the BBCode link and it will have an explanation on posting pics.. I'd like to see your setup.. d:^)

coastie- I wonder if the number of incidents has anything to do with the relative numbers of Bayliners on the water or with the lack of experience for your "average" Bayliner owner who is prolly someone who is new to boating and doesn't "know" they're voo doo yet.. Laughing All kidding aside, I've heard derrogatory things of some sort on just about everything in the water.. That said, there seems to be a special dislike for the things but I still wanna know what the root of the problems were/are..
..On the more "quality" rigs, I've seen several at what seems to be give away prices.. Most are late 70's or 80's models.. Some later.. Looks like they'd be something fun to mess with if the hull was sound.. Cool d:^) Schneeky..

Yeah I think its a combination of experience, the boat, and the fact that its a cheaper boat and a lot of people buy them and then dont maintain them properly. But I will say I have a friend that has a trophy with an o/b and hasnt had any major issues. Seems like there are going to be a ton of boats on the market with the fuel situation, let me know what you are looking for price wise, and Ill keep an eye out.

Atleast get one with some rodholders on it.

You can have a lot of pleasure on a fishing boat, but not a lot of fishing on a pleasure boat.

Schneeky,

I don't much about Bayliners except what I've heard like everyone else but I thought I would share with you my experience in older boats. I bought mine about 1 1/2 years ago and had looked around a bunch before I got it. It's an older hull, '87 but in good shape with a '01 engine with low hours. The boat had been sitting awhile and needed work, wiring and wood work mostly. It was the price that attracted me, about 5K for a 24' walk around and trailer. Since I only get to the coast 4-5 times a year it made ense to me to invest 5K instead of 25K. Very Happy

It has taken some sweat but it's a great ride and has a cuddy and head. The wife and the dogs like that but it's a comfortable fishing rig as well. Of course I have to admit that I enjoy working on the thing about as much as riding on it, well maybe not quite as much. Confused

Anyway I hope this helps a little and good luck on whatever decision you make.

coastie- I'm lookin at these cheap old boats ya see hangin around folks' back yards wasting away.. Hopin to find something reasonably sound.. F'rinstance, I'm studying on a couple of late 70's Allmand Cuddys in the $5Kish range.. I'm counting on lots of cleanup, some repair and hopefully, some mods (boy,oh boy.!!) Gotta make it proper for my uses, ya know.. Wink Very Happy

hrdcor32- Ya reckon.? Razz Laughing

BB- Good info.. I'm figuring that if the hull, power and tanks are reasonably sound and of proper quality material, and ya can get into it "right", it should be do-able.. One of the previously mentioned Allmands has s'posedly been recently re-powered.. And repowering these is a whole different ball'o'wax.. Plus, I got a skinny mechanic with constant PC problems I can swindletrade into some engine work.. Wink
..And hey, I LIVE HERE and the cost of newer rigs is just staggering. Ain't gonna do it.. If I'm forkin out the kindof dime I see these rigs goin for it's gonna hasta have a dang deed and some sortof inclination t'wards increasing in value.. Sounds like ya went the smarter route ta me, if yer a person with the time and motivation to do the work.. And there's a great deal of entertainment to be had workin on'em as well, IMO..
..And I'm with you on the comfort.. Schneeky's a great little boat and I really like it a lot.. But Mrs Sandy just doesn't do well on it and gets fried no matter how much sun screen she puts on seems like.. Plus the lower gunnels seem to worry her but she won't say nothin... But I see her "white-knucklin" anything in reach when she's tryin to move about.. And since she's my main bud & fishin partner, I'll do what I can ta make her and me comfortable.. Very Happy Cool She dang near turns green from "holdin it" so a head would be nice as well.. For the most part all I need to be able to do is drop a line over the side.. I ain't money fishin' and truth be told I'm just as happy toolin around checkin out the goins-on.. I know where there's some fish if I want'em.. d:^) Schneeky..

..Been seein that one around on Craig's.. It's in the right price range but doesn't really "blow my skirt up".. I do like the outside access to the front, which is not an option on some we've looked at..
..Thanks for keepin an eye out, tho'.!! d:^) Schneeky..

We just switched to a walkaround (we rode a bunch and ended up with a 232 Grady Gulfstream) for the family so that we could stay out all day and the kids could take naps and get out of the sun. I love the fishability of a CC, but I don't know if I will ever go back. We fished in 18 degree weather in VA this winter and it was actually pleasant witht he enclosed cabin. You don't necessarily get out as fast, but when you do you are not soaked to the bone from the salt spray. Also, sitting in the shade when you are trolling and doing your "business" in a toilet instead of a 5 gallon bucket has its perks. I don't think you will regret the switch to a walkaround.

Also, my $.02 worth is don't be afraid of an old hull, just check it carefully. Spend your $ on the motor, this is what will give you the most headaches, and get you back in.

I'll keep my eye out for something for you Jake. Gonna keep the whaler?

I think those junkyard bound force engines helped seal the idea that
Bayliners are bad boats.
Shoot have a unnamed friend that bought a new cuddy/force.
He sunk so much money in the engine he ended up giving the whole works away for free boat, trailer and all. He's now in a 21'sailfish/yamaha.

I kinda like them.
