Three questions for Old Salts:

1. Is it safe to take a straight-line course from FP Light Tower to CF River red buoy # 10, just off BH Island on the river side? The most recent NOAA survey of this area is 1989. The bottom has surely been changed by hurricanes since 1989.

2. Can an 18-inch draft boat be launched and landed at low tide at the Wildlife ramp at Kure Beach (near the ferry dock)?

3. Can an 18-inch draft boat reach ZekeÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Island at low tide?

1...Don't Know. Have not tried. Read the water as you go.

3...???It changes all the time. I used to gig back there all the time before the inlet closed up. If you stayed in the channel it was about 4 foot deep. If you go out of the channel...you run aground.

#1. I would have to say probably not the best choice. That route would take yhou directly over Frying Pan Shoals. In calm weather, not a problem, you have 8-10 feet minimum. But given some wind, these shoals can make some pretty impressive and steep waves rise up. Better to take a course on the west side of Frying Pan Shoals, even if it's a slight bit longer. Just did this last weekend with SW winds 15+. I would not have wanted to have been on the shoals in this. Like a washing machine.

Old Salts

Thanks for the responses.

I will now launch from the NC Wildlife ramp at Kure Beach; will continue to literally steer clear of FP Shoals; and will sound Zeke's Island as I go in.

Was out at the FP Tower last Sunday, and returned on a course to the two buoys in FPS Slue and then WNW 2 miles, and then in a straight line towards Red buoy # 10 (which now only exists on NOAA charts.) Sea state on the way in was 2-feet max. Based on your advice, I am sure water could be rough on the approach to the Slue in a 5+ feet sea state; and I saw breakers when I got close to where 10 would be. I will change my waypoints to give the Shoals a respectful distance, all the way in. Don't want to become another "wreck" symbol on the charts.

On the way in, saw a boat (size ~25 feet) on my starboard side, about 2 miles away, going like a bat out of Pittsburgh. He came to an abrupt stop and the last time I saw him, he was DIW. I stopped for awhile and listen to channel 16, but heard no calls,so I went on in.

Pogo.....Are you tring to get from The Fort Fisher Ramp (Near the Ferry) to the Ocean?

You MIGHT be able to.....but I would NOT advise it. That area is surrounded by "The Rocks" and that cuts you off from the Cape Fear River. In a flats boat you might find a way through Buzzards Bay to the river......but you better have a real good idea about where you are going. The only way to the ocean would be through The River Channel at Bald head. "New Inlet" (The inlet that used to supply that area) closed up after one of the storms...Fran I think..

Well, actually that would have been Floyd, but who's taking names anyway. You are correct. "New Inlet" is currently known as "No Inlet". You can walk across it at any tide.
