I'm carrying my wife out this week and she wants me to make a dredge. Something she seen watching Jose Wejebe on tv. We bought the bar yesterday and now we're trying to decide what type of lures to put on it. We normally fish the 20-40 mile range and I was thinking that rubber squids would be a good all around lure to use. We don't want any hooks on it, just using it to attract. I'll run it off one of my downriggers and probably run one bait close behind. Any suggestions on lures to use on it and why one type may work better than the other.

The Fisherman Weekly magazine just did an article on them, I don't know if there's an online version. It's a newsprint style magazine, with regional editions. I just lent mine to a buddy or I'd email you the article...
The article I read talked about making them out of dead bait, like ballyhoo or mullet, as the intent was to get the shimmer of real fish, and sort of make it look like you're dragging a bait ball. (but this can get really $$$) If your artificial squid have some iridescence, then maybe they'd be fine. The other thing it mentioned was being certain that they all ran true, as one spinner in the whole lot can mess things up pretty bad, that's why if using dead bait, it recommended cutting the tails off. Good Luck!

I dont think that Jose was the one that put that dredge together. It was a captain they picked up to help them fish that area. He rigged the whole thing with fresh mullets in 45 min. All of them had chin weights as well. It was truly an art form. Good luck with yours. If you figure it out please post a few pics.

I've rigged a ton of dredges from mullet to ballyhoo and they work great. However, you have to be very exact on how you rig them. If one or two baits aren't lined up right, it's gonna run slanted and not straight. For fishing the 20 - 40 mile range, I would invest in a Tournament Cable Bucket dredge w/ the Mannhadens on it. This one has the most action, is ready to go out of the bucket, and is very simple. To effectively fish a dredge offshore, you're gonna need to rig several dozen baits to be able to replace eaten ones as you go. One little barracuda can ruin a dredge and you have to re-rig all over again. In your situation, the bucket dredge will be very easy and you can buy replacement baits at only a few bucks a piece. When you're done, it sits in the bucket perfectly with your dredge weight, line, etc. I have four and I rig them with a 4lb. dredge weight and about 30 feet of 600lb. mono. I then add about 15 feet of rope to the mono to cleat off the dredge to the boat. For your situation, I highly suggest this over the natural bait dredge. It will save you a ton of money and it works. I have four different ones and the Mannhaden dredge produces the most fish. Hope this helps you out.

They make dredge bait rigs that are very simple. You just rig the bait like a ballyhoo, etc. and rubberband or wire it closed.
