July 6, 2008
Friday, we headed back out to the shark hole in search of king mackerel. The king bite was really slow, but as I was in the process of changing out baits, the double pogy in the prop was went to screaming. At first I thought it was a smoker king, until it began tail walking. SAILFISH ON!! We cleared the other lines and gave chase, as we had the fish on a light tackle live bait outfit with 20 lb. line. After a 30 minute fight, we released a beautiful 57” sailfish in great condition. On Saturday, we headed to the gulf stream. We put baits in just short of the 100/400. Right before we arrived at the structure, we saw a beautiful rip right in front of us. On the inshore side of it, we released a small barrucuda, on the offshore side of it, we put a small bull dolphin in the box. We worked the rip for a while with no other hook-ups, then trolled up the break toward the blackjack hole. About 3 miles short of the blackjack, the shotgun line went to screaming. This fish ran like crazy. I thought we had hooked into a 50+ lb. wahoo, but when the 25 lb.’er came to the boat, I saw why it fought so hard. It the hook buried in his jaw, but the line was wrapped around his tail. We trolled for a little while longer and the planer bait went off. It wasn’t long before the fish showed it’s self. BIG dolphin. After a good 15 minute fight, the 30 lb. bull was on ice and we were back trolling. It wasn’t long before we another small dolphin in the boat, and released a couple more ‘cudas. We also had a sailfish come up behind a bait, but couldn’t get him to eat, as well as a couple more wahoo bites that shook the hook. All in all, a pretty good day. Here are some pics from the last couple of days. _________________ Capt. Lyndon Carter
