I spoke with Howard Varnum at the US Army Corps office in Wilmington about the low water spot coming out of the creek into the cut from the back bay of Topsail. He said the side caster dredge Merrit was on the bar working in the inlet and would not have time to work the creek issue until it returned in August. I made him aware that the Can on the turn is on the sand bar and the Nun is in the wrong place as you must go on the wrong side of the Nun to make the turn. He said he would speak with the coast guard and attempt to get the buoys moved to correctly mark the channel. The real problem is there is very little water at low tide, about 2 feet in that one area. This may not be a large issue for many boaters, but is for me as my boat drafts 3.5 feet with straight inboards. If this is an issue for you I recommend calling Howard at the Army Corps and asking for him to get the Merrit in there to dredge as soon as possible. His number is 910-251-4411. I believe the more people he hears from the more of a possibility something will be done sooner rather than later.
