Yeah it was finally time to fish the Mako, after a week of rigging it like I wanted with the new electronics and equipment then the storm blows up and I had to cancel a few trips, by last week I was tweaking. Well the weather and the fish cooperated.
Fished with my regular Art this week, tried the 10 mile boxcars where another boat had some sucess the day before, just had a few short strikes, no love from the fish. Around 10am heard some of the guys inshore starting to see the spanish popping up so the decision was made to run in. Heading towards John's Creek in about 50' of water we found the spanish going off. Stayed on them for 2 hours catching fish on almost every cast using a 21gram Maria jig, the fish were between 18"-24", when Art would bring his jig in there was usually about 20+ fish following it taking swipes at it. Great fun!
Friday and Saturday fished the Eddie Hanneman Sailfish Tournament with Billy (Ice Cream Man), Brian, and Anthony. Had alot of fun, ate well (Billy the jury is still out on the sushi for me, especially after rigging ballyhoo), caught a few fish, no sailfish though. Friday we were next to the first sailfish of the tournament at the 10 mile rock, worked out to the 12 mile rock, down to the 10 mile boxcars, all for a barracuda that ate 2 baits and gave us a really good run. On Saturday made a decision to work towards the 30/30 and those areas. Found scattered grass some of it forming up caught a nice mahi then worked out to where the rest of the fleet was and spent the rest of the day washing ballyhoos and watching other boats catch sails, were in the area but could not get a bite. Learned a few things about circle hooks and rigging baits, and what not to bring on a fishing trip (sushi).
Sunday fished out of Topsail with Tim and Billy from Pennsylvania, boy was I glad I ordered curtains with the boat! Left Topsail inlet heading for the 2nd set, got about 7 miles out and had pretty water and building seas. Turned towards the 1st set, boy were we seeing alot of flying fish so it looked good. Started a little off the bouy and started catching kings right away. Picked at the schoolie kings til about 10:30 when I saw a squall to the south and the wind notched up to about 17kts, put up the wing on the windward side and started trolling to the hill. Had a few more bite-offs but was pretty uneventful once we got closer in. Had half the fish on pink and orange yo-zuri deep divers, the other half on dead cigar minnows on Hank Browns and Pirate plugs. Great report Capt. Jim. We were in the 10 mile areas on Saturday without much luck. Bite-offs and a bailer dolphin that flipped off over the transom. Closer inshore got into the Spaniards. _________________ Steve Everhart
