Has it occured to anyone else that this twic thing is a level of redundency that is unnecessary and costly...anybody with a captians license,CDL, A/B ticket or any other job that might put you in a port facility or in charge of a vessel(inspected or otherwise) has to have ONE MORE background check and level of clearance just to do buisness. The only thing about the whole process that was new was the fact that they shrunk the fingerprint scanner thing....much smaller than the one at the REC. Which raises another point, If I already have an MMD that I have been fingerprinted to obtain, why do I need to be printed again? Does this set of prints go into yet another secret squirell network database? I suppose if I knock over a gumball machine in some port facility to gank all the quarters out of it(I dunno,to buya soda or somthing) it's gonna take two branches of the department of homeland insecurity to solve the great caper.....If I knew that the monies generated from this program were doing somthing worthwhile I'd cease to care much, but it's just one more thing to renew to stay employed.....I guess I wouldn't need it if I was a wal mart greeter.....
A!

I'm getting TWICed in a couple of days and was wondering if I could use my fingerprinting and background checks to satisfy my captains license renewal requirements. Has anyone checked into this? I really don't want to drive to Charleston just to get fingerprinted.

I wouldnt count on a rethinking the idea... The state port in Wilmington is going online with it soon. And an enforcement date for NC is upcoming. I personally dont care for it and it makes us in the CG look horrible. We didnt come up for it (thanks TSA) but we are stuck enforcing it. This is just my personal opinion and has nothing to do with the Coast Guard though!!!!!
