IF YOU BOTTOM FISH YOU NEED TO READ THIS ALL OF THIS THREAD!!

Council Seeks Input on Measures to End Overfishing of Gag and Vermilion Snapper
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is holding a series of six public scoping meetings on an amendment to reduce the commercial and recreational harvest of gag grouper and vermilion snapper. Recent stock assessments show that overfishing is occurring for these economically important species. The Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee has determined that a reduction of 61% is needed for vermilion snapper. Substantial reductions in harvest are also anticipated for gag in order to end overfishing. The Council has begun development of Amendment 16 to the Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Plan for the South Atlantic to address this situation.

The scoping meetings and a public comment period are being held to receive input regarding possible measures to end overfishing, including modifications to current regulations and potential new measures (closed seasons, recreational boat limits, commercial trip limits, etc.) Written comments may be sent to SGAm16Scoping@safmc.net until 5pm on September 17, 2007.

More information, including a schedule of scoping meetings, is available online.

Ex CCA pres is the one spearheading the reduction proposed! It's not just the commercial guys that are going to suffer from this. Gag limit will be cut to 1, Verm to 4 per person. Don't wait for a "outfit" to step up, show up to the meeting youself. Not trying to come down on you, just telling you to make the effort.

Just an FYI, if you are in the S. Atlantic area, they are hitting our fish quotas again. I will be at the meetings coming up and would hope that others will show up. At this time I am trying to align myself with some of the fisheries board members in getting the connections to have data we are willing to collect presented. I think we had a good break thru yesterday after a 3 hour meeting with one of the board members. If I can get warm bodies to show up, it would be a great start to show interest. At this point, the studies that are being used are that of either old data or logs from Fla, AGAIN. Please let me know who can go to the upcoming meetings. Until I can get the data cruncher locked in, I am just trying to show opposition. If you have any underwater photos of gags and scamps in any kind of abundance, please pm me(divers). I will need "basic" coords, depth, etc just to document. I am going to start hitting this really hard! Anthing numbers that are sent will be completely confidential. On the redfish tagging study, when the data was summitted for areas, the red dots on the maps covered 1/2 mile and up.

Tired of having decisions made for us and not goning on acurate data, I have been busy setting appointments to try to make a difference here. I have appointments with the following:

NC Fisheries Resource Grant Program in two weeks for proposals on what they are in need of for data thru FRG

Have talked with Shawn Mckean NC Fisheries Assoc (CCA won't like this since he reps commercial fisherman) Like it or not, we are all in this together.

Trying to streamline what information as needed for Dr. Daniels (director NCDMF)

Any info on how to proceed will be helpful from any of you veterans. I am serious about this and could use all the support that I can get.

Please consider taking time out of schedule to at least show up to the meetings to voice you opinion.

The loophole that the Feds keep using is they can use the "best data available" excuse and I would like to throw a monkey wrench in that excuse.

The boat dealers/manufacturers and charter captains would seem ones screaming about this too --Especially the manyfacturers!!!-- BTW----u might get some pics of groupers like CAPT Daves vids but no one in their right mind is going to let a hot grouper hole number out or even in the closest 10 nm's of it----lol --- Just ask Mervil Darnell about tellin a local charter dude where his "go to king hole" was years ago---half of Ocean Isle showed up on it one day-----aka "Battery Hole". But your correct ----got to have bodies present at the meetings or just stay home and watch movies and not fish offshore.

Checked it but nothing from you.

As for the coords comments, they are just dots on a map, I don't care about mine, I have 400 I haven't checked yet. Half of the ones we dive are found on the way to another spot anyways. No big deal, there are plenty of places to fish.

Just show up and show support. That is the main thing we need at the moment. You don't have to get up and speak, just show up.

Another thing is we need to stop pitting the rec guys against the comm guys. Define the problem, address the best solution, then act on it. For instance, if it means we have to stop letting shrimpers inside, so be it. We pay hog farmers not to raise hogs, tobacco farmers not to farm tobacco, why not offset the shrimper for his losses if it is truely going to better our marine ecosystem? We are all going to pay one way or the other. We need to work together and take on the bigger problem which is the federal panel instead of bickering between ourselves.

our fisheries are declining every year ,it's obvious that the Dept. of Marine Fisheries aren't going to do anything to stop it,maybe at least the Feds can stop some of the rape of our fisheries, the last one from the DMF that tried to restrict some of the commercial harvest was Bill Hogarth he lost his job because of it,now he might be in a position to help us Wink

What's the news on 15B? Did the council pass the recommendation to prohibit the sale of snapper / grouper by folks with only state commercial fishing licenses? I thought something was supposed to come out by today 3/11/08 after last weeks meeting in Jekyll Island?

I recieved this information from SAFMC last week.

"The Snapper Grouper Committee has recommended that approval of Snapper Grouper Amendment 15B (addressing bag limit sale issues) be delayed until the Council's June meeting. The decision comes after reviewing comments received from fishermen and in light of new data on the value of sales in North Carolina by non-federally permitted fishermen. Similar data for Florida is also being compiled and will be included. The Committee is recommending a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement be completed to incorporate this new data analysis prior to the Council's June meeting. The SEIS will include a 45 day comment period. It is anticipated that the Council will follow the Committee's recommendation and delay action until the June 8-13 meeting in Orlando."

If you do not want them to eliminate your right to sell fish with your standard commercial fishing license (SCFL), then you need to write a letter to the SAFMC & your congressmen, legislators, & governor soon. They may take action on this at the June meeting.

What type of pressure do you think Red and Scamp grouper will get if the they put even more limitations on Gags. They Regulate these fish based on information that is not accurate.

Not much more since they cut the creel for grouper down to a total of 3 instead of five.
