Capt. Dave or anyone else who knows???
When looking at the i-map ans using the sst function. What are the difference in the 4 types SST charts to chose from. I'm not sure what the letters stand for example (Modis) or (Composite) what excatly am I looking at. Also just being curious which one do you guys use the most or is it a combination of each like on Reefcast/wavecast.
Thanks for the help
P.S. just read an article in SPortfishing Mag. that talked about SST sites I just emailed them asking them to include this site next time, since the service is so good and free to users only asking for donations!! _________________ Southern Buoy Fishing Team |

On the homepage a little bit down there is a GPS looking device that links to audio help for the IMAP and explains the SST features.
The SST differences are basically just different projects, modeling types, etc.
MODIS stands for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and is generated by NASA.
AVHRR stands for Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer and is generated and administered by NOAA.
The FPT is explained in the audio file, but I forget the source.
And Composite is a combination of the FPT and MODIS if I remember correctly.
Something like that.
I usually rely on the FPT and then you can click onto the other modes to see the variations in the area you are researching to get a good feel of the accuracy of the data. |

The FPT is the one we process internally. We bring in the raw data...error check it...make sure everything, lines up and post it.
The composite is a Cloud Free 3 day average of the Modis SST. It does not have the resolution of the AVHRR or the FPT model but works even when cloudy.
BTW...Every SST you have ever seen comes from the same sources. The error checking and position error is the only real difference from this site or that site.
Two other things I would like to point out.
You know these sites with "Mouse Overs" (Where you roll the mouse around and it gives you the Lat/long and temp) EVERY one of them is inaccurate in the center of the image. It is impossible to make them accurate in the center of the image because of how mouseover works. That is why I do not offer that as a feature. With my map you have to click to get the LAt/long and the temp. When you click....we querry the database for that location and give you the lat/long and temp for that location.
One other difference...
99% of the on line SST charts are pretty pictures and if the color is X then the temp is Y.
FPT is not like that. We do it the other way around. WE store the raw data in a database and when the map is pulled we say if the temp is X then the color is Y.
Why does this matter....the others are like making a copy of a copy....ours shows only the orginal. When I built I-Map I chose to make it as accurate as possible....and it is!
