Wrightsville Beach Fishing Report through 4-19-2008:

Putting a lot of miles searching for the Bonito without much success but have ran into a few small fast moving schools and managed to catch a few. Been hearing some real good reports a little further up the coast. Still think we will get a better local showing before they are gone.

Encountered my first school of breaking Bluefin this year (well over 100 lbers) about 6 miles due east of Masonboro Inlet. Random encounters by other boats, some right on the beach. Not that you should target these monsters but they are a special sight to see.

Blues, blues and still more blues. Right up into the creeks. Have been able to find a nicer class of 4-5 lbers with some consistency, ripping 1 oz Crippled Herring behind the surf, mainly working the Masonboro Island eddies and around Mason’s Inlet. Pound for pound a 5 lber on light tackle is hard to beat.

Starting to see a larger assortment of reef fish around the nearshore AR’s. Picked up a couple of keeper flounder and I know there are more there but avoiding the bottom dwellers, sharks and blues can get frustrating at times. Best bet is bigger bait and patience.

Fished a bunch of evenings throwing topwaters in the creeks. Some beautiful and serene moonlit nights. The action was far from fast and furious but have raised quite a few curious Reds and Trout while landing a few of each on the smaller side. I really enjoy this type of fishing and it is only going to improve as summer approaches.

This week is looking like the break everyone’s been waiting for. Light winds and temps in the 70’s as far out as the forecasts are reading. Get out there if you can!
