The reason I sat at the beach house for all but two days and never made it past the mouth of the inlet two years ago, was because you HAVE TO PICK YOUR DAYS. It is a little easier in the Summer months, but you have to pick you days. If the forecast is for anything over 2 to 3 maybe 4's, and anything that says building, of showers, and Thunder storms, I would stay in shore. Take it easy, and when you get the chance, Have a GREAT time FISHING.

Take you first run on a bluebird, south west with varible winds. 5-10 or less. you'll be ok. Just tag along with someone from your marina to be safe.
Radio and gps are a must.

Figure a third of your fuel going out, a third coming home, and a third reserve. If that fits your fuel curve, then fuel isn't an issue on any given day. If you do 4-5' in your 20'er without problem (assuming they were waves and not swells), you've got enough boat on any decent day. Do remember, however, seas in the stream can be very different from inshore, and wx in the afternoon is usually more disturbed than early morning ...

I guess I am the only one who thinks you are crazy to try this, particularly this time of year.

I am with you Rabalo. And it's only because we got out 23 miles, perfect July day 90 degrees 2 ft seas, and wham...looked like a roll of toilet paper rolling at us from onshore,no weather warning at all and the rain felt like ice water!Took us 5 hours to get back at an awful 7 knts maybe,#85 gallons of fuel.Worse than a Mexican prison....until that day,I thought only of fishing, now I know the danger as well.Just my 2cents worth.

that is not any problem just watch the weather. I go 35 miles out all the time on my 19 ft Mckee Craft. You don't have to be in a 28 footer to have fun so go fish!!!!!!!

Try to travel with other boats. I run a small boat out of Oregon Inlet and we try to travel with other boats or follow the fleet.

Have fun and be safe

i really appreciate all the input. So far this is what I have gotten and I think that it's a great bit of advice: make sure all safety gear and radios are good (that's a give in), make sure the weather looks good, bring xtra fuel, and try to go out with a larger boat. I figure that with all that I should be as safe as possibly can be. And if that all fails, well hell then, we all gotta go someday, might as well do it catching fish!!!

Guys great input I'm going to be in Hatteras in July and I have 21'6 Deep Vee with 150 yammy 4 strk. I also have 70 gallon Tank and I think I will be safe to run to the Rock Pile I just added a Garmin 440X (XM weather unit) with Nexrad radar that should keep me informed of Winds and Storms and changing Wave direction and Heights. I go out 35 miles all the time out of Topsail but never to the stream. Would like some input from some of the experienced captains running a smaller boat with everything I mentioned above WOULD YOU FEEL GOOD ABOUT GOING OUT IN IT if the weather looks good! I just bought 4 TLD25 lined for Wahoo and some big old Mahi's...

Thanks for your help!!!

Don't worry about it. What's the worst that could happen? If you swamp just stay witrh the boat. If you run out of gas, the coast guard will pick you up somewhere off Maryland. If it gets rough go slower. Take food and water in addition to gas.
