I am not sure if anyone can anwer this question but I will ask it anyway. Why do the guys fisng on the pier use a surf rod as an anchor rod? Is it necessary? Why couldn't you just free line the live bait with a ballon or something. Similar to the way you do when you are anchored or drifting a wreck?

Easier to keep baits seperated with 2 rod system than 50 people floating balloons from the end of the peir. Besides here in oak island a south wind which is best most of the time would put ya under the peir or on the beach. Go out there and ask. Im sure they would help ya understand it more

that about awnsers it right there though. the T on the pier is prime real estate to guys that are stuck on shore

The surf rod throws that Anchor out there as far as you can get it. The old close pin rig slides that big old blue out there ... Big girl hits that blue and trips that close pin rig.. just got to use some team work to clear many of the anchor lines....

Baloons are great if the wind will let it happen, few and far opps though...

Bogue Inlet Pier and Sea View on Topsail are prime king piers, get there early as spots go fast this time of year and even faster in Oct.

Bougue just put up a 30+ pounder for the first king of the year...

Definately a challenge this way... tons of spectators though if you snag one....

Beats gas prices ...

Thanks for the info guys,
I wasn't planning on fishing from the end, I was just curious as to why it was done that way. It makes sense, I never thought about the wind and all.

oh yeah, I king fish off the pier here on Oak Island. I prefer to use a 12' anchor rod but will use a 15' if I can get one at a good price. If you have a good arm like some of the guys I know do you can get the anchor out around 200 yards. The best I can manage is about 125, but its almost enough to spool my reel. King fishin on the pier can get expensive. If id known then what I know now I dont know if I would have started it. But it is a helluva lot of fun and some great ppl to be around. Someone always there to help you out or give you rigs, anchors, or break-aways if you need them.

Bogue just put one on deck, man, Ocean Crest pier put a few on in the last couple of weeks. lol

We used to do the same at Surf City Pier, thats where I got my start in saltwater fishing. Ive always used an anchor rod with a clothespin rig. And on the few days where the wind is cooperative a balloon here and there

Anchor rod setup makes you have a set place to have your baits, keeps down the tangles from ballon/corks. And at the same time, you can control your baits depths, distance, etc. And also its good for the pier, because if you got lines going everywhere? Not many people will be kingin, but you take a anchor setup/zip line & put that on a some what small T pier? You could have 30guys fishing at once or like the larger piers and have 50 guys! You can control your bait & anchor, but you cant control a ballon/cork floating freely. My two cents

Well, I aint gonna be kingin off the pier now since they closed yaupon pier. I refuse to fish off ocean crest. So I guess all my fishin will be done on my boat until they decide to reopen yaupon pier
