It has been so nice to finally get some days in without wind! We were able to get out on all our trips, and boy were they great trips!
Had my regular trip with Arthur and we had a great time with 14"-20" spanish mackerel on light tackle with a few kings mixed in. We stayed away from the crowds and had a steady pick of the fish for 4 hours. We did have the bite of the day when something smoked down a orange yozuri and left us scratching our heads with a broken in half, tooth-scarred plug? All fish were caught on pink and orange yozuri deep divers.
Saturday had Howard, Mark and Baird on board, greeted by a nice calm sea coming out of the inlet we ran straight to the Schoolhouse. Started pulling cigar minnows on Hank Brown rigs and Pirate plug rigs and did not have to go long before the downrigger goes off and we start to catch kings steadily. The downrigger and the green Pirate plug produced most of the fish. Around 10 am we decided to move off to WR4. Passing over the wreck on our first pass we get a screamer on the downrigger that dumps half a spool and then tail whips the line, bummer. Made a few passes around there with no more nibbles so the charter looks at me and decides to extend to a full day and hit some ledges for some grouper and snapper. First ledge produces a few sea bass and a beeliner, next ledge the same , third ledge we find some fat 24" reds, move out to the next ledge and find another grouper and some pinkies, start to troll home and get another king before we decide to throttle up and run.
Sunday I had Billy, Mariana, and daughter Katie. We started at the 5 mile and picked at a few spanish but they were not there as good as a few days earlier. Picked up around 8am and headed to the 7 mile area, same thing slow, just a shark to show. Worked out to the 12 mile area and started to mark some bait near the top. Caught a king on the downrigger at 20', caught a king on the top line then had the downrigger go off with another king for a double header. Went around in a racetrack pattern and had a triple of mahi, one nice one, 2 bailers, went around again caught another king then it got slow and we picked up a barracuda and a few sharks and then ran home. A few great days on the water with a bunch of fun people who really enjoyed the fishing the sea was able to provide, the kind of trips where I really love my job! _________________ Captain Jim Sabella"Fortune favors the bold!"
