What a day here along the Crystal Coast, the weather was great and it just felt like the fish were going to eat today. I had a good friend onboard today with his brother and their two sons. Some of the crowd said they were not used to being up this early and I told them it will be worth it! We got out to ole faithful "Charlie" buoy and started jigging up bait, there were some pretty baits there. Logan and Ian were pulling them in and we were loading the live well.
We got the lines out and it was not long before we had a knock down, Logan was up first and was doing all he could with the light tackle Ugly Sticks and Penn 550's. We got the fish to the boat and it was a 15 pound Baracuda, the boys had a ball with him. We got'em back out quick and a 25 pounder sky'd out of the water and everyone was amazed, I grabbe the long line and jerked it a little and WHAM! "Fish On". Logan was on this one too and was working it really good, put the gaff to it and in the box. A little later, a "chicken" dolphin hit the bait down around 20 feet, this time Ian had the rod, he worked it and put the dolphin in the boat, couldnt get any others to come up, this made his dad John happy, said he loves Dolphin. We put'em back out and we had to get John on a fish, WHAM the lines were screaming, John was working it and got the "poor mans downrigger" (rubberband and 5 ounce sinker) to the boat, his brother Colby went to take it off and ended up cutting the line too, this fish was a "Hoss" somewhere in the upper 30's, I just laughed because we were talking earlier about Mark's (Liquid Fire) incident. We gave Colby a hard time for a while and I told John, dont worry we will get another one. It was not long and the port side line was screaming, I told Colby to use the pliers this time and dont mess up. We were good to go got the fish along side and I went to gaff it, the fish pulled the gaff out of my hand, I have gaffed a lot of fish and this has never happened. The fish was swimming aruond with the gaff and I grabbed my Redfish dip net and said get that fish over here and put him in the net.
All in all a pretty exciting day here on the Crystal Coast.
