Many flee Turks and Caicos as 'Ike' approaches

This image provided by NASA shows Hurricane Ike, still a Category 4 storm on the morning of Sept. 4, 2008 when this photo was taken from the International Space Station's vantage point of 220 miles above the Earth.
PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos (AP) -- Hurricane Ike barreled toward the Turks and Caicos as a powerful Category 3 storm Saturday, prompting an exodus of tourists and locals from the normally idyllic Atlantic island chain.
Turks and Caicos and the southern Bahamas appeared to be first in line to take a hit from Ike, and many people decided they would be better off elsewhere.
"I don't remember ever seeing a mass exodus like this," said Tracy Paradis, a longtime resident of Providenciales who was heading to Seattle with her 19-month-old twins to wait out the storm.
Business in Providenciales covered windows with plywood, and most hotels closed and ordered tourists out.
Jonathan Cohen, from Queens, New York, had already planned to return home Friday but others at the Club Med resort where he spent the week were forced to cut short their vacations.
"What we saw was pretty bad," the 35-year-old physician's assistant said. "So for it to be two, three times worse, well, it's time to get out of here."
Not everyone, however, was heading to the mainland. Many locals went about their business as usual - under mostly clear skies - and even a few tourists planned to stick it out. The airport in Providenciales was expected to close on Saturday.
In the Bahamas, the government urged tourists to evacuate the sparsely populated southeastern islands.
"We are strongly encouraging all of our visitors to voluntarily evacuate," said Vernice Walkine, director general of the Tourism Ministry. _________________ "... and the sea will grant each man new hope, as sleep brings dreams of home."

if you queue up Capt. John's myspace page it says "Capt. John Back in the U.S until Ike acts right...."
so I take that to mean he got outta dodge. Seems like a wise move. |

I was extremely lucky to get a seat on a last minute flight back to the U.S. on Friday afternoon. I had a bad feeling and took off. I still haven't made contact with anyone on my island, but I do know that there was some major damge in the T&C. I have a couple of friends in Provo who lost everything they have, but no one I know of is hurt. My island I hear has some serious damage, but I don't think anyone is hurt. I plan on flying back on Sat. if I can. If our airport runway is damaged, than I'm stuck here for a while. _________________ Capt. John Mallette

Intuition (that "I had a bad feeling...") is always a good thing to heed.
We are all glad you made it safely away from IKE before he beat up paradise!
thoughts and prayers to all on your island that were in harm's way and to all who are threatened by the many cyclones out there this season!
hope you make it back safely and quickly.....

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm getting more and more updates by e-mail as I go. Looks like Grand Turk and South caicos were almost completely destroyed. The news reports no deaths, but I already know for a fact, that's not true. My head manager is supposed to be flying to Ambergris today and wants us to sit tight for a few days until he can survey the damage and let us know when we can get back. If it ends up being a while, I might have to find some work here until I can go back. Anyone need a mate/ boat washer for a little while? _________________ Capt. John Mallette

That news makes us sad.
If I had a boat, license, and business along those lines then I would hire you...perhaps someone may have an opening...
I have connections to other lines of work, unfortunately not fishing.....if you need temporary employment PM me.... I will see what I can do....
We are all glad you are alive and hope your Island is not as bad as what you were told....

Where are you located now Capt. John? Florida I bet. Sorry to here about your island. I remember one in Jamacia in the early 90's that eliminated most of the birds on the island. Let's hope your wildlife faired better. Best regards,
Capt. Mark |
