Closed Contour means a slope. In your case (depicting depression) it means a drop off. The closer the lines are, the faster it drops off. If they are wide, it means a gentle slope.

Look at a chart around the Same Ole and you will get an excellent example. Garmin has this on their newer units......

Hum I was taught relating to Topographical maps that a closed contour when speaking of above sea level AKA a mountain or peak means a rise and the smaller the loop (closed contour) the higher towards the top or peak.

With this in mind to me it also means the widest loops are closest to the point at sea level and when looking at the map the smaller the countour loop or ring what ever you want to call it the deeper you are going towards the center of the earth. Or in the water small closed contour loops are the deepest or bottom of a hole.

Am I thinking right?

Couldn't this be the same, just looking at it from the opposite side of the spectrum?
I mean instead of looking at it as closer lines get deeper faster, How about they get shallower faster?

What about a canyon? You need at least four lines to indicate the depth of one. Two for the upper shelf and two for the bottom. If the lines just show a drop-off, there would be no bottom to the ocean.

an outcrop in the normal sense is when there's a rock stuck in the ground. The exposed upper portion is the 'outcrop'. I imagine that correlates to underwater structure, but it'd have to be a damn big rock for that to hold.

They ain't made a fishing chart worth a crap in my opinion!!

Maps Unique is OK, but will only get you close.

Mark your own spots, and then you will have something.
