The USMC base Camp Lejeune and UNCW's Coastal Ocean Research and Monitoring Program (CORMP)deployed a real-time weather and oceanographic buoy on August 1. This buoy was purchased jointly by the USMC and CORMP, and marks CORMP's third buoy deployment this summer.
The buoy is located about 4.5 miles out of the New River Inlet at 34°28'34" N 77°16'47" W. The Coast Guard Cutter ELM deployed the buoy on Aug. 1 and then deployed the long awaited Frying Pan buoy on Aug. 2.
Both of these buoys update hourly (and that includes wave data!) and information transmitted by the buoys is also incorporated into NOAA Weather Radio.
You can get the data from the buoys from both the CORMP website and the NDBC website. CORMP refers to the buoy as LEJ2 and NDBC has it numbered as 41035. The links are provided:
