Just curious, I am sure everyone breaks the ballyhoo's back and squeezes out the juices Wink

before putting them in the water, but do you prefer to:
1). Punch out the eyes??
2). Remove the pectoral fins??

If you have fished with them either way, I'd love to know which way you prefer. Thanks!

BOTH presentation is everything if he is just dragging behind a skirt he is worthless MAKE that Hoo swim. Break the backbone punch the eyes cut the pec fins & take the guts out of him.(We use a rigging kit & love it)

That sounds like a lot of work! I try to fish where the fish are so I can just put a hook in them and drag away!.

I rarely punch the eyes out unless it is a naked skip bait (I'm gonna put a skirt over it any way so what does it matter if the eyes bulge a little?)

For more serious trips, I will break the beaks off and brine them the night before. Other than that I usually don't troll them for more than about 1hr before either they get hit or get changed out.

The reason for punching the eyes is to keep them from spinning. We check or rebait every 20 minutes.

Ok, now I'm the one with the questions.

You clip both Pectoral fins off at the body?

"take the guts out" Do you mean squeeze from head to tail to remove feces from body cavity? Or, do you have a surgical procedure?

How many baits do you guys go through on a normal day? (If I use 24 it was a hard day at the office!)

Go to a tackle shop & ask for a Ballyhoo rigging kit it has a tool to remove the guts through the anal hole. (boy that was proper) It also has a backbone breaker & a few more usefull tools. Yes we clip both fins. I always brine atleast 4 dz. med & atleast 6 horse for every trip. We used 6 dz today but we also had a good day. Maybe this helps alittle!

Personally I do not use ballyhoo....but, if you want a some advice on a real easy way to use them, try this. They make this little head and a beaded chain attached to like a 7/o hook. With the aid of a bait needle sold separately, run the loop end thru the butt hole of the bait until the J of the hook is nice and parallel with the body of the bait. Then punch out the eye balls so that the two pieces of the head portion can come together. Attach the beaded loop to a nice copper colored piece of number four or five leader, say about 36 inches in length and terminally attach it to your mono with a standard fishermans not. let that bad boy out and and let it do your work for you. You can probably attach a fish witch or some other feathery contraption in front of the leader if you like. I dont know about you...but breaking the poor ballyhoos back and then squeezing his innards out is just plain gross besides being a lot of work. These lures are easy to set up and once in place, the bait swims like a a champ.

Phil,
I like to make modifications to 'em. Aint that what us rednecks do best, improve on products. I like to take some number 5 wire and attach a size 4 or 6 trailing treble to that rig, then attach a 2 to 3 foot section from the beaded section out to the terminal tackle end. Sure, it is a pain to get a swivel to push thru that head contraption, but it sure does work. Have a good one.
