Greetings all,
This came up again this morning and I wanted to talk to everyone about this to see what ya'll think....

Here's the deal...Lets say you have a photo gallery here.....then you go to XYZ board and link an image that is here. As an example lets talk about 2, 1 Meg Photos. So everytime someone opens that thread on XYZ board....it pulls 2 megs of transfer (Bandwith) from here.

Presently I have an htaccess file in place that prevents this. It was not so much to stop ya'll from doing it....it was to keep other websites from Hotlinking my images through out the site and running their sites on my bandwith. (This is HUGH problem on the internet...Google "Hot Linking")

Both of these cases don't sound like much.....but with almost 2000 photos here and TONS of content, trust me it adds up very fast and can be very expensive. (Not to mention the vidios that are here, at 20 megs each)

My thoughts are this.....I do not mind paying the bills here but I try to make sure that everything we do and I pay for helps build the site. More or less furthers what we are trying to do here.

Paying for someone else to have a cool site does not seem like a good idea to me.

Here is what I could do. I could place a "Watermark" on every photo here that says "FryingPanTower.Com" or "Hosted by FryingPanTower.Com" and then remove the htaccess so that ya'll could post pictures anywhere on the internet and have it linked back here. Then more or less I am paying for the bandwith but we are getting advertising for the site out of it. To me that would be OK. This way we are getting something out of it anyway.

One other issue here....one of the things I do not like about watermarking.....if I recall once I watermrk them....they are watermarked and there is no way to remove it.

Please tell me what you think?

What do you think we should do?

How should we handle this?

Please Speak Up!

Dave

All the images in the photo album will have the watermark? Or only when you hotlink it to something else? It doesnt matter to me its your site, I just work here, LOL Laughing Thats what most other sites do, so I guess its the way to go, I dont link anything to this site anyhow............

BWB,
They would ALL be watermarked when you upload them. I would try to do in a tastful manner though...Small....Bottom of the pic...clearly readable.

I say just keep the hotlinking blocked....the pictures were intended for this site and if someone wants to put THEIR pics on another site, let them upload it there.....I don't agree with the pictures that help make this site successful be used to further another fishing site when those pictures are not even any of the users of the site....know what I mean?....that's what my vote would be.

I would water mark them so you get as much BANG for" YOUR Dollar" as you can .You give enough info away for free, so you need to get some return for it .

Dave, question about the hotlinking...if you have a way to block hotlinking....then there is a way to determine if the image is being hotlinked, correct? So, couldn't there be a script that runs when the image is hotlinked to and then apply the watermark at that time?

Chum,
Too much server overhead. The only way for it to work would be to check every images request header to see if it was from FPT....if not watermark then display....

It would EAT a lot of CPU cycles.

Yes it sould be done...but it is not the way to do it...

Why not keep it Blocked and let people use imageshack or one of the other free hosting sites to upload the pics too. It only takes a couple of seconds to upload a pic and it gives you the code to directlink to that pic (on imageshack's server). Maybe we could compile a list of these programs for people to use ??
