Me and my mate decided to take advantage on this pretty
weather that we had this week, So we loaded up the boat,
with fuel, Bait, Ice.
The next morning around 5:30 am, We launched the boat
at New River Marina,Heading towards the inlet I punched
one of my spring grouper fishing spots into the gps.
As we were passing the sea bouy, I shouted to my
mate 48nm to go.After our 2.5 hour trip we arrived at
our first stop of the day. The seas were 1 to 3 foot with
a northeast wind around 5 to 10kts. Ideal conditions for
anchoring the boat .I circled around the spot to find
just the right place to put the boat.Yelled to my mate to
drop the anchor "This looks good!"
My mate made the first drop and as soon as he reached the
bottom, He was greeted by a sharp tug of a grouper.
He missed his fish
I was on my way down and as soon as I hit bottom wham!
I missed
My mate dropped for the second time and didn't miss that one!
He soon boated a 7lb Red Grouper.
I dropped my second time and caught a 6lber.
Then on my third drop, Thats when a freight train hit me.
I hit the button on my reel and got the first 20feet in a hurry.
Then the large grouper figured out he was hooked.
He ripped off about 30feet trying to reach his hole,
but fell short of his hole and I was able to get about
25 to 30 feet back. After about 10 mins of this give and take
I was able to get another 50 to 60 feet more from him.
I could see him about 30 feet under the boat.
He was a full grown Blackbelly, about 40 to 50lb.
He was almost whooped! Somehow during those last
30 foot he wasn't going to give up and surged one last
time and the Hook broke free.So close, but yet so far.
I was
Well thats how my day started, But it finished much better.
Nice box of groupers & a hog snapper.
And a Fireback
