We are scheduling a trip in the Tiara to Swansboro Hole 50-100 fathoms for next weekend any advice on wahoo rigs would be greatly appreciated ,I usually run Iland lures ,drones ,sea witches all in purple/black ,burg/black,blue /white and a cedar plug in the prop wash
Kinda want to keep something out for tuna/dolphin but would like to know what cable/wire ,lures etc thanks in advance for all your advice

down out of ocean isle earlier this summer they tore em up on the islander flasher lures with rigged bally's. but thats just me in the black/purple... but most of thaose came on top while marlin fishing...just my 2 cents hope it helps

Pirate plug rigged with 4" of tooth proof wire then mono leader and medium bally on the outside long rigger 6/8 knots

Can someone explain why you use planers for wahoo and not downrigger balls? Are you not running them from downriggers at all?

Use a #24 or 32 planer 100ft of 200/300 mono cleat it to the stern and send it down . Rig your bait and let it out 30/50 ft or how ever far you want it to run behind the planer put the rod in the rod holder. Use a #64 rubber band and wrap around the line coming from the rod by passing the rubber band thru its self 5 times,this is where most people mess up the rubber band has to grip that line tight. I use a double ended coast lock snap, take the 2 ends of the rubber band and clip it in the coast lock then clip the other end of the coast lock on to the plainer line,now you are ready to let 100 ft of line off the reel the clip will go right down to the planer and when the fish hits it will pop the rubber band. If you don't have the rubber band gripping the line real tight the bait will slip and a bow will form in the line and pull the bait right up to the planer. Have lots of clips on hand and just keep sending them down as you need to re-bait .

the wahoo tournment dudes in Ft Lauderdale fish high speed double skirted Islanders rigged with 6 ft of 300lb stainless cable and 10/0 stainless doubled hooks---35 ft 300lb mono shock---followed with either a 1 2 or 4 lb torpedo sinker thats rigged on 6 ft of 300 lb stainless cable---the whole blooming rig is 47 ft long----charter captain who builds these monster rigs says the hoo's dont scream off long runs with this rig and they just waterski the fish right in the back door----I know for a fact this rig stays deep at 15 kts with 4 lb torpedo sinker---- Shocked

downrigger balls will blow back to much with the speeds you will going. If you are targeting just hoo's you will probably go faster than you normally do (up to 15kts) when trolling for everything else. Some people just go the same speed all the time soem people change for different species I have seen it work both ways.
