I always use a swivel snap to connect to my king rigs. Are there any thoughts about tying right to the barrel swivel on the king rig? It seems like the less tackel in the water the better.

I think you will be much better off tiring your line/leader right to the barrel swivel and not using a snap swivel. A simple uni knot works well for me.
Good Luck

also no need to use more than a 35lb spro swivel. i doubt you will be using much more than 2-4 lbs of drag so 35lb puond swivel is suffiecent.

I use ball bearing snap swivels to pull dead bait at high speeds to prevent line twist. I take them off to slow troll live bait.

Lunkerlure,
Might want to check how your baits are running. If you are getting line twist, even at high speeds, your baits may be spinning.
Good Luck

I too believe you're better off tying directly to the rig swivel.
No snap swivel.

But the biggest King I ever caught 29.5 lb was caught using a snap swivel????? Question

You never know!

Midnight,

I let them spin at high speeds. I've had good luck with frozen cigars skipping on top. No big fish but alot of 10-12lb ones. I have even watched several of the fish slash at the bait before they catch it.

If the Mahi or Kings are biting, it doesn't make a bit of difference. With snap swivels its just easier to change them out when you have a charter on board and the fish swallows a rig or damage's one.

Everybody says that the less tackle in the water the better but the biggest Kings I see caught every year are usually the ones that slam a horsehead ballyhoo in the gulf stream or when the boys are Bluefin Tuna Fishing with the heavy artillery.

But with that being said (RAC) still won't let me use them when we tournament fish. Wink

Gotcha. Thought you were talking about the big ole gals. I'm a firm beliver in keeping everything small and stelth for these. Shorter wire, no snap swivel, floro leader, smaller barrel swivels, and big bait. Ever been able to get a live Spanish back in the water alive and slow troll it around some big fish? Great bait, but hard to keep alive.
We did catch a 36# fish about 5 weeks ago on a frozen cigar on a big Hank Brown with 44# wire, so you never know.
Good Luck
