Went up to Diver's Rock again on Saturday to do an article and see if we could put Max of the Fisherman's Post on his first bonito. We left the inlet early and was on station right before the sun came over the horizon. As soon as the sun was above the water the fish started to show. The first school we came up on Max put his first bonito on the boat, a nice 4lber. Billy "Ice Cream Man" was getting hits but they were not staying pinned. We worked a few more schools and Max put his second bonito on board a nicer 6lber. The boat traffic was starting to increase so we decided to hold over the structure the fish were showing over and vertical jig. This produced some quality 2-3lb bluefish but the bonito were getting skittish with the boats running them. We moved around a little more until about 10am when we decided that we had enough for the article and decided to head for the hill. As soon as we were throttling up a school popped up and Billy fired a cast into them and immediately hooked up. The fish ran good but was staying on top. I commented that I did not think it was a bonito when it made another good run then gave a nice head-shaking jump and we saw the chopper blue that it was. After a few more minutes the fight was over and after some photos and a quick measure the 13lb fighter was let free. Not the most epic fishing day but a great day with an excellent crew! One of our buddies which fished up there with us just trolled around all morning and finished the morning with a dozen bonito and two 8-9lb blues all caught on Yozuri deep divers.
