Tuna,
There are a couple resons for this.....and I am "Trying it out"....

The main one is to encourage folks to Sign up and particapate in the site.

The second one is that I have heard more than several folks folks say they did not feel confortable posting their Fishing Reports for the entire world to see.

The third one is purely because of marketing. The Sponsors of the world want the Membership Numbers and I have to pay the bills somehow.

I have not decieded if it will stay like this...

Dave

Capt. Dave-

I'm not sure that "HAVING TO SIGN UP" is going to encourage anyone to join the site. It is plainly stated that it is FREE, and if getting something for nothing is not enough for them, well there's just no hope and they are obviously too cheap patronize any of the sponsors of the site.

As far as the reports go, I have YET TO SEE any "SECRET" numbers posted. If someone doesn't want the world to know what is being caught, why post it on the dang internet for everyone to see? Why not just pm. it or send out e-mails to friends? I think the whole point of posting reports is all an ego thing for the private sector, and in the case of the charter guys an advertising tactic, which is good business. Another thing that these "REPORTERS" need to realize is that the fish they are catching today are already caught, nobody else is going to catch their fish.

You know, from the time I was four years old, my Dad taught me that WE AS FISHERMEN all share a common bond. There are no secrets. If you are catching fish and the guy beside you is striking out, offer some tips, help him out. Twenty some-odd years ago when I got into the "DOING IT FOR A LIVING" thing, it was still the same, all the charter guys would lend each other a hand to put more fish in the box. Five or six years ago it started to change and now the secrecy on the docks is just downright disgusting.

You know, the more I think about this, the less I want to participate. Sorry about the rant.

I have no problem with the reports, downloads, PMs or any thing else requiring me to be logged in. I enjoy and appreciate the "FREE ACCESS" and no charge for me using the FPT. As well as the knowledge learned, neat “FREE TOOLS” and friendships made on this as a result of me joining and logging into the FPT.

If someone has a problem with the way you set up and administer the FPT as a "FREE ACCESS" Web-site they can always go another Web-site. Where they can read the limited flow of helpful information and share in the self centered agendas of the owners and their cronies.

I would venture to guess that my views represent the majority of the members that have help form this community of catchers. Dave bottom line you made the FPT what it is today and pay the bills, it is yours to run as you see fit and ours to enjoy.

Thank you for providing the best Catcher and Teaching Web-site in the USA.

Tuna,
This site now takes 1 entire server by itself to run. The Weather Models take 1 entire server to run and Supermap takes a GREAT big server to run. My server bill runs about $500 a month. I have thousands of hours and 10's of thousands of dollars invested in the tools on this site that you and everyone else use 100% for free.

If me trying to make this site more marketable to sponcors makes you feel that you do not wish to participate....then so be it. I do the best job I can with what I have. I do not expect everyone on the planet to agree with me....nor do I ask them to. The internet is slam full of websites. Participate were ever you see fit. If it is here...that is fine. If it is not...That is OK too.

This is not meant to be mean or to run you off or anything else. I am always open to suggestions about anything. I try to have an open mind and to see others viewpoint.....but I can tell you the Ol' I will take my toys and go thing...is hysterical and after all that I have done for the NC fishing community and that I continue to do for the NC fishing Community I find it laughable that you would even say such a thing. Maybe you should reconsider that thought.

Dave

Capt. Dave-

Seems here someone is missing the point. If y'all re-read my last reply, and THINK about it, you'll see there is not a problem with a marketing strategy. My point was that forcing someone to do something they are not inclined to do on their own, will not help the cause. I'm all for better marketing, more business for everyone. Also ,if you look at the date I joined, it was before this went into effect and I will continue to veiw this site as I do others.

What got my attention was the statement about the reports being put out for the world to see. I still say if you don't want the world to know, don't print it on the internet. How many places off the Carolina coast are there, heck ,just in the tower area, that are 80-100 feet? OOPS! better not answer that might giveup a secret spot!

This topic may have left a bad taste in the mouths of some of y'all and all I can say to that is "too bad" This is JMO and I am entitled to it as you are entitled to yours. I hope you can respect that.

Dave, KEEP IT UP.

This site is more useful information and has more tools than all the other sites combined. No one is forcing anyone to use it. I am proud to be a registered member of this site - small price to pay - actually no price to pay.

The members here are the most knowledgeable around. Any advice they give is solid. With Supermap, Capt. Dave has created the ultimate SW fishing website.

Now if he can do something about that wind - at least here we can TALK about fishing! Cool

Tuna,
I did not miss the point at all. In many ways I agree with you. Read access was open to the world for years and this was a concise decision on our part.

Will it stay this way? I don't know. I can tell you I am working to increase the membership numbers because I have been told by the people that spend money is that one of the big things they look at is membership numbers and they thought my membership numbers were to low.

Tuna,

IMHO, there is a big difference between "fishing" and "catching". As Dave has said time and time before, the website was implented for us to have TOOLS that would increase our catching abilities.

Whether or not some people become a member or make a donation is up to them. But to have Supermap and all the other TOOLS are a huge benefit to me and to others.

I agree with Dave and support our sponsors. It takes money to run this wonderful site, and last time I checked, we are all working for a living!

Keep up the great work Dave!

As a back door thing, if you issue a FPT membership card and those sponsors worried about your numbers were to honor that card for a discount at the store / business they might also get a good idea of how many people really use and view this site. I always buy at home when I can and if any of your sponsors have Web sites I can order from I will be glad to order from them. When I can't find what I want at the local tackle / marine supply stores between Sneeds Ferry and Southport I would prefer to order from frineds and family of the comunity. With the price of gas now I have to question driving to Wilmington from my place to buy tackle but wouldn't think a thing in the world about droping an online order, especially if the discount helped offset the state taxes.
