The sounds of a thunderstorm are still booming away outside my window as I write this. Thankfully it held off and allowed us to have a great get together at Capt Joe's house. It was great meeting alot of folks in person and an awesome job was done by Joe and Dave organizing the get together and bringing us all together....THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
Now onto the fishing.
The spanish mackerel and king mackerel bit very well for us on Saturday and Sunday! On Saturday Arthur Brownell fished with me and we had a great mixed bag of some fat sea bass, 30 or so spanish mackerel in the 14" to 20" range and 4 kings up to 30". All fish were caught on yozuri deep divers, small and medium in pink and orange. We stayed on the fish for 3 1/2 hours not going more then 5 minutes without a fish (or two) on. We tried casting to them but all we had was a small lemon shark chase the jig. When we put the lines back out we immediately started hooking up again. Arthur kept 3 of the nicer spanish and the rest along with the kings were released to fight another day.
On Sunday newlyweds Dave and Carla from Nebraska were my crew and they were a fun pair to have! With the outgoing tide and the wind when we reached the inlet it did not look too promising but my crew was game as we set the lures at the sea bouy and started trolling to the Liberty Ship. We got there in the 3-4 foot chop with a cotton patch all around us and trolled around a little looking for the fish from Saturday, I started to mark the bait but everything was holding near the bottom. We made a few passes and started to pick away at the spanish. The fish bit steadily for the next 2 hours as the wind and seas dropped off, about 10:30 we decided to run in and see if we could find a drum. After a nice quick ride in we set-up on a dock and caught some drum and a spot! on GULP! shrimp on a jig head. Another great day on the water with some great clients, CONGRATULATIONS on your recent marriage Dave and Carla!
