We just bought a place a N. Topsail Beach. I understand the fishing is excellent in this area. Can anyone provide me w/ any tips on surf fishing in this area?
I have been a long time fresh water fisherman, but I am looking forward to learning some new things and getting involved in the salt water side of things. Any tips on gear, bait, etc. would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your assistance
Sincerely,
Dr. Crimson |

The only surf fishing I've ever done was pretty straight forward. A good solid spinning rod probably 7' or better, and a double dropper rig with enough weight to keep the rig on the bottom. Everybody has his or her tips. Try several different types of bait each time out. Sometimes its shrimp, other times its cut bait you just never know. I like to fish a high slack tide if possible. I will look at the beach at low tide to see where the holes and rips will be. Then when the water comes back in you know where the fish will be!.
Good luck to you.

crimson,
I don't surf fish but there are alot of people that drive out onto the beach at N. Topsail for surffishing. I can tell you that there is a severe drop within 6 ft of the beach. You will go from sand to 27 ft. within this 6 ft. There are alot of fish caught there. As for the hardware, I'm going to leave that to the other guys. If you ever see me cruising through the inlet on my boat the "Liquid Addiction" you can bet that I'm going to try to catch-em up. _________________ Steve Brantley

| crimson, i hang around the north end of topsail a lot, but if you want to have a little more beach access with your vehicle, if you have a 4wd, go to the town hall at the south end of topsail and get the beach permit(seasonal) and drive out on the beach(limited) and drum fish in the fall. the last 2or3 years have been pretty productive for the drum fisherman, along with other species of fish. on the other hand if you want to catch more fish, invest in a boat if you don;t already have one. the best surf fishing in the state is up the coast a little ways on any of the outerbanks islands. |
